Cast lead alloy weight, probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The weight is in the shape of a truncated cone with a sub-circular flat base from which the sides taper inwards to the flattened round topped apex. The weight has been perforated, with an irregularly shaped hole running from the apex to the base. The weight measures 20.64mm in height, 32.80mm in diameter at the base and weighs 106.08 g. Lead weights were used for a long period and lack many diagnostic features, so are difficult to date precisely although most are Medieval or Post medieval in date.

A corroded post-medieval copper-alloy trade weight from the reign of Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685). The weight is circular with a wide raised rim on the top. It is 33.3mm in diameter by up to 4.1mm thick and weighs 22.94 grams, 0.808oz. Though it has probably lost weight through corrosion and damage it is siginificantly underweight for an ounce weight, for which it is the usual module (see Biggs 1992, 51). When made the mass may have been refining through filing; numerous diagonal fine marks are visible on the lower surface. It would have originally been part of a…

It is higly corroded and completely illegible on one side. On the other side can be seen a raised pattern, possibly a cross, but the rest of the design is unclear. The token is dark grey in colour with irregular surface. It measures 29.9mm in diameter, 5.7mm in thickness and weighs 17.10g. Due to its worn condition, is difficult to suggest the original pattern and weight for this piece and therefore relate it to a val…

Crude broadly conical lead weight of unknown date. It has a central hole with a recessed ring around the hole on lower surface and comes to a rounded point at the top. It measures 17.9mm long, 20.0mm diameter at the base and weighs 28.42g. The hole is 6.3mm in diameter at the top, 5.4mm at the bottom. Plain lead weights were usually made locally for a wide range of individual uses. They are therefore hard to date precisely, although most are Medieval or Post Medieval.

A cast lead truncated steelyard weight that is circular in plan and conical in profile and slightly asymmetrical. There is a perforation from the base to the apex for the hooked rod that would then attach to the steelyard arm. The hole is off centre. The weight weighs 190 g which equates to about 6.7 avoirdupois ounces or almost half of an avoirdupois pound, as one avoirdupois pound was 15 ounces. One Roman pound or libra was 328.9 g so this weight would equate to more than a half of a Roman pound, but half an English troy pound equates to g, and the shape and weight sugge…

A Lead weight of probable Roman date, c. AD 43-410. The weight is sub-circular in plan and a squat, piriform shape in profile, and with a slightly concave base. From the apex the vestigial remains of an iron attachment loop are present, which can be seen to pass through the weight and is visible in the base. Dimensons: Height 23.6mm; diameter 30.3mm; weight 92.35g. An irregularly shaped lead weight with an iron core found during the excavations at Colchester is published by Crummy (1983: 101, no. 2510), and whilst the ease with which lead can be cast makes such objects dificult …

Modern copper alloy trade weight from a stacking set. The weight is circular with a wide raised rim on the top. The surface of the recessed area in the centre is largely obscured by corrosion product, however, the initial Z can be seen - presumably indicating the weight in ounces. It was probably originally a quarter of an ounce with some weight lost to corrosion. It now weighs 6.6g (0.23oz).
