Roman amphora handle fragment. Hard fired mid-orange fabric with c.15% angular quartz temper up to 1mm across. The fragment is the upper part of the handle where it attached to the vessel and is highly curved. White marks go across the breaks and appear to be later deposits. It is 48mm in diameter and weighs 245 grams. The form suggests it is a Dressel 20 or related type. While the fabric is similar to Dressel 1 the form is very different and it is probably a later Dressel 20 as these tend to have a hard fired orange fabric unlike the earlier buff fabric (Tyers 1996:87-9). Such vess…

Incomplete Medieval lead ampulla. All that survives is the lower half of the body, the upper part is missing. The surviving part is in poor condition and it is difficult to make out any decoration. It is perhaps possible to discern the popular scallop shell design around the edges of one face, an emblem that was originally associated with St James the Greater and Canterbury, but eventually with the act of pilgrimage more generally (Spencer, 1998, 41). Spencer (1998, 3) suggests that ampulla were popular in England from the second half of the 12th century until the early 14th century, w…
