Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete flint thumbnail scraper made from a secondary flake. The object survives in good condition with only a small amount of plough damage to all edges. Cortex covers the flat proximal end. The dorsal face has four flaking scars and the left, right and distal edges show semi-abrupt retouch. The removals are long and sub-parallel. The ventral face is smooth but uneven with no obvious bulb of percussion. The flint is mid-grey in colour and of poor quality. However, the ventral face has a slightly milky patina suggesting that the object may be an example of later reworking following e…

A flint thumbnail scraper made from a secondary flake. There is a small amount of plough damage to all edges. Pebble cortex still covers the flat proximal end. The dorsal face has a large flaking scar at the proximal end, with another smaller one to the left. Around these, the left, right and distal edges show abrupt to semi-abrupt retouch. The removals are scaled and invasive. The ventral face is convex no obvious bulb of percussion. The poor quality flint is mid-grey in colour, with milky patches. It has a high gloss patina, particularly on the dorsal face. This lithic probably date…

A flint thumbnail scraper made from a tertiary flake. It survives in good condition with a small amount of plough damage to all edges. The dorsal face has two flaking scars in the centre surrounded by very fine, abrupt retouch on the left, right and distal edges. The removals are short and scaled. The ventral face is convex with the remains of the bulb of percussion, though a portion of this is missing. The flint is poor quality and dark grey in colour, with a few milky brown patches. This lithic probably dates from the Neolithic to Bronze Age period. Length: 22.9mm, Width: 18.2mm, Th…

Small flint thumb nail scraper made from a secondary flake, probably dating from the Neolithic to early Bronze Age. The scraper has a small butt, with diffuse bulb and very discreet ripples, suggesting that a small, soft hammer was used. The ventral face is concave. The dorsal face has high-gloss, whitish pebble cortex remaining on the left-hand side. In the centre are two long, curved flaking scars. To the right of these is low angle, short, stepped retouch. Below the retouched edge, on the ventral face, a small notch has been removed. There is also a small amount of retouch in the ce…

Thumb nail scraper, made from a secondary flake, of probable Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The butt appears to have snapped off following deposition leaving a sharp break. However, very discreet ripples suggest that a soft hammer was probably used. The dorsal face has brown, matt, pebble cortex remaining on the right-hand side. In the centre and to the left of the dorsal face are two long, thin flaking scars. Above this, at the distal end, is semi-abrupt, long, scaled retouch. This retouch continues along both the right and left edges, becoming shorter and abrupt. The flint is da…

Knapped flint flake with extensive retouch, probably an incomplete thumb nail scraper. The tertiary flake has been struck off a platform with a prominent bulb on the ventral face. It has a prominent central aris on the dorsal face and damage at the proximal end. The right edge on the dorsal face is curved in with two large chips removed, one from each face. On the left edge a notch has been made just above the platform presumably to snap the thinner, retouched thumb nail scraper off the platform. Above the notch the side curves out and the back to the almost straight distal end. This …

Three possible thumbnail scrapers, probably of very late Neolithic to Bronze Age date (2500-1500 BC). 14.1 grams in total. a. Formed on part of a flake with bulb of percussion and striking platform removed. The ventral face is plain with few ripples. The dorsal face and left edge is covered in cortex apart from areas of retouch. The curved right edge forms the scraper with long scalar semi-abrupt retouch. Medium to dark grey flint with pale mottling, 6.4 grams. b. Formed on the distal end of a larger flake, the proximal end and bulb have been removed by a snap. The left prox…

Two Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age thumbnail scrapers on opaque mid to dark grey flint. 1. D-shaped in plan with a curved distal end with long semi-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch along most of the distal end, worked from the ventral face. Very short scalar, semi-abrupt retouch along both edges also on the dorsal face. Prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral face. c. 40% of the dorsal face is covered in cortex in an arc down the right side. It measures 21.0mm long, 26.8mm wide, 7.6mm thick and weighs 4.61g. 2. D-shaped in plan with a curved distal end with very long invas…

D-shaped in plan with a curved edge and straight edge with some long semi-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch around the centre of the curved edge and at either end of the straight edge, worked from the ventral face. Aris from other previous removals on the dorsal face. Ripples from percussion run across the back, parallel to the straight edge suggesting it was made form the centre of a larger flake. c. 15% of the dorsal face is covered in cortex in a patch in the centre of the straight edge. Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age thumbnail scraper on opaque mid brown and grey flint with pale mottling and banding. The scraper is D shaped in plan with a curved distal end with long semi-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch along most of the distal end from the ventral face. Faint diffuse waves of percussion on the ventral face. Hinge fracture at the proximal end and large impact indent, perhaps from attempts to snap the flake. Two small areas of cortex, on the dorsal face, one down the right edge and one at the distal end covering c.15%. The form of the cortex suggest pebble flint. It …

Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age thumbnail scraper on opaque mid brown and grey flint with pale mottling and banding. The scraper is sub-oval in plan with a straighter proximal end. There is a striking platform at the proximal end and a prominent bulb of percussion with bulb scars on the ventral face. The dorsal face is concave due to a large central removal from the same platform with arises to smaller facets from other previous parallel removals. Small worked flint side scraper formed on a tertiary flake. The flake is roughly leaf shaped, with a pointed tip at the distal end. The ventral face is convex and uneven, with a prominent bulb of purcussion. The dorsal face has a central ridge, with a large flaking scar on either side. At the proximal end are a number of small flaking scars on the left hand side. The right hand side has abrupt to semi-abrupt, short, parallel retouch running from the proximal end up to a few millimeters before the tip. The flint is mid-grey in colour with lighter patches in places. This scraper is like…

Large flint scraper of Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The object is roughly semi-circular in form. It has a wide butt and prominent bulb, suggesting that a large, hard hammer was used in its production. The flint is very poor quality and mostly inner cortex. The dorsal face has three primary flaking scars on its surface and several laminar fractures around the proximal end. The distal end still has rough outer cortex remaining towards the left side. The right side has a number of low angle, short, parallel removals. Length: 61.53mm, Width: 47.90mm, Thickness: 17.43 Weight:

A small flint implement, created on a secondary flake. Probably a scraper and notched-flake, but possibly an unusually shaped arrowhead. Sub-triangular in shape, the object does look rather like a crude or damaged Neolithic arrow-head. However, it is complete, apart from a missing tip to the distal end and would probably be too mishapen to function as an arrow head. Neither does it fit in well to the standard typology of arrowheads from this period. A small amount of cortex remains to the right of the distal end of the dorsal face. Semi-abrupt to low angle, invasive, scaled retouch can…
