An incomplete cast lead alloy spoon bowl and incomplete handle of post-medieval date. The spoon bowl and handle measure 77.3mm length, 44.1mm in width at its widest point and weighs 19.6g. On the back of the bowl there is a short rat-tail. A mark has been stamped inside the bowl adjacent to the stem. This appears to be the initials WR, ligated within a circle. This mark is not recorded in Homer's "Five Centuries of Base Metal Spoons". Unlike goldsmiths (who worked in silver and gold), little is known about the marks of spoonmakers who worked in pewter and brass and it is not possible t…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A possible cast lead alloy mount of probable early post-medieval date. The flat circular mount measures 32.2mm in diameter by 2.6mm thick and weighs 10g. The mount has a cusped edge formed from moulded ring-and-dots and a central motif surrounded by a plain circular border. The motif is difficult to distinguish because of wear and damage. However, it may be a bird with wings spread. The disc has been perforated off-centre, as if to be worn as a pendant. This is quite rough and does not correspond with the top of the motif, so it is probably a later alteration.

One side features a right-facing laureate bust and on the other side there is an urn of flowers. A more complete revolving seal matrix of a similar date from Headbourne Worthy, Hampshire, has been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database (reference HAMP-E02294).

A cast lead alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The vesica-shaped (oval with pointed ends) seal measures 33.9mm by 21.3mm by 3.4mm and weighs 9.2g. The legend starts with a star and appears to read S' THOME DE HEGGWERE, the seal of Thomas of Heggwere. Some off the letters are the wrong way around. In the centre of the die there is a floral motif. On the back there is a longitudinal central rib which has an open loop at one end. This has been bent over to one side. The seal matrix itself has been bent slightly out of shape.

Post medieval cast lead-tin alloy button probably dating to the 17th-18th century. About three fifths of the button and the loop is lost to an old break. The front is slightly convex and decorated with a raised, cast design of a pellet border containing six symetrically arranged tendrils with two short branches and a longer branch curving in from the outer edge, the longer branches bifucate into two curls, the central curls from each branch create a ring around a central pellet giving a flower like appearence. The back is rough but appears plain with a central irregular indent where t…

Cast lead alloy fragment. Possibly a handle escutcheon from a Roman or Post Medieval pewter jug. The fragment has a wide base plate, roughly lozenge shaped with angled sides widening from the top and irregular lower sides. The lower sides are shaped into five lobes with wider lobes at the centre and sides with narrower lobes between them. The indents between the lobes are emphasised by incised lines. The outer lobes are damaged. The front of the plate is slightly convex becoming more convex towards the top corner. From the top corner projects an oval sectioned handle with a broken end…

Medieval to early Post Medieval cast lead bi-faced token. On one side is the raised design of a square divided into a grid of 16 squares, each alternate square is shaded in with a tighter grid of lines giving the impression of a checkered cloth. On the other side is a raised design of a triangle with a circle on the centre of the top line, possible representing a shield or pendant, decorated with three chevrons. It is 18.3mm in diameter, 0.9mm thick and weighs 2.60 grams.
Both designs are potentially heraldic (three chevrons in various colours were used by several families)…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast lead alloy steelyard weight with a conical top and a broken base. It has an iron bar though the centre which projects from the top and would have originally formed a suspension loop. It is now 25.8mm wide, 23.2mm tall and 22.3mm across; it weighs 36 grams. Biconical steelyard weights with iron suspension loops are common in the Roman period and although this fragment is broken and only the top conical section remains it is probably Roman in date.

A conical cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date with flat base and rounded point. In indent near the point does not appear to develop into a hole. It is 19.6mm by 16.3mm at the base and 33.5mm tall; it weighs 45.38 grams. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Small flat, irregularly shaped object, possibly a trade token or gaming counter. It is probably made from lead, though this has an unusual slightly shiny, brownish patina. One face has a raised design consisting of a circle divided by a cross, with a single pellet in each quarter. The reverse is undecorated. The design seems likely to imitate the 'long-cross' seen on Medieval and early Post-Medieval coinage. Fletcher (2005, p.47) mentions that tokens with a cross and pellets on one side and a portcullis on the other became briefly popular in the 16th century, immitating the contem…

A lead token of Post Medieval date. One face has a crude pattern formed from lines radiating outwards from the centre, some joining to form sub-triangular shapes. The other face has two raised letters, probably EP. Fletcher (2005, 66-9) suggest that simple tokens with initials on were probably a development of the post-Tudor period and may have been used by farmers to pay the wages of manual labourers. In the 18th and 19th centuries the initials often seem to have become longer (ibid) or an individual may even have been named in full, suggesting that this token dates to before this pe…
