Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman or post medieval copper alloy ring, probably a finger ring with broken hoop and thick bezel. The hoop varies, thinning from a rectangular to a flat cross section on one side of the bezel and oval in cross section on the other. Part of this may be distortion caused when the hoop was bent and broken. The bezel is broadly rectangular with semi-circular ends flanked by rounded knops in each corner. It thickens towards the centre and is notably more thick near the base than the top where there is a flat edge with a step in thickness part way back. There are extensive file marks acros…

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A single piece of irregularly shaped copper alloy casting waste of uncertain date. The piece weighs 24.62 grams and is approximately sub-rectangular. It has a possible linear edge on one side and three flat surfaces placed at angles to each other almost forming one half of a hexagon in profile. However, the surfaces opposite these, possibly inner surfaces, are very irregular such that this does not look like the socket for an object. It is instead interpreted as an irregular waste product from casting. The fragment is 27.8mm long, 35.4mm wide and c.14.8mm thick. Although unda…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy stud or mount of unceratin date, Iron Age to Post Medieval. This stud is circular in plan with a highly domed hollow head being convex on top and concave beneath. The dome's edge is slightly damaged on one side, while its upper surface is abraded and pitted. An integral spike projects from the centre of the inside of the dome and extends for 12.8mm before terminating in a rounded and abraded end. This spike is sub-circular in cross section (4.7mm diameter). The stud is a light green colour and the dome is filled with concreted soil material. The stu…

Unidentified object of uncertain date. The piece is a long, solid, triangular point, tapering evenly in width down its length and slightly in thickness to the rounded point. It is hexagonal in section with wide flat front and back faces and angled sides on both faces. Down both angled sides on both faces are rows of large circular indented dots. The broad end is concave in plan and possibly complete in the centre with broken stubs to either side. It is slightly curved in profile although this may be damage. It is 48.8mm long, 6.5mm thick by 12.6mm at the top, 3.2mm by 3.6mm just befor…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Conical cast lead weight of unknown date. It has a hole through the centre running from top to bottom. The sides are irregular with several indents and there is an irregular raised border around the bae. It is 24.4mm long, 22.6mm wide and 13.05mm thick. It weighs 31.38 grams. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval. Although lead spindle whorls can be similar in general form the irregularity of this example makes it unlikely it was used as a whorl.

Of the latter two one is a flat piece of copper alloy with one roughly right angle corner and the opposite edge bent up at c.70 degrees, 22.65grams. The other is a thicker flat piece with again one edge bent up through a curve to 70 degrees and the opposite edge turned down at a right angle, with an irregular break across it, c.19.44 grams. Mis-cast copper alloy item. The piece has a amorphous blob of solidified molton metal with a short cylindrical extension to one side. The cylinder has an old break at the end opposite the blob and a double incised line around the centre. The cylinder may be part of a miscast artefact such as a candlestick or it may be from an aperture where metal was poured into a mould. It is 32.6mm by 38.5mm and 13.7mm thick, the cylinder is 13.4mm in diameter and 15.4mm long. It weighs 35.74 grams.

One fragment of burnt clay which is probably a piece of daub. Orangey-pink external layer with buff areas. Sand inclusions, c.5% of total and occasional soft orange inclusions, fired daub or plaster. Irregular shape with a shallow C shaped groove, probably an impression from the wattle to which this would have been stuck. 13.97 grams. Such material is hard to date out of context and could be Iron Age - Post Medieval but given other material found near by it is probably Roman.

A lead suspension weight probably dating to the Medieval to Post Medieval period. The weight is sub-rectangular in shape. The top narrows to an integral suspension loop and the base is flat and protrudes slightly from the sides all around. The object is quite crude and all surfaces are pitted. The weight measures 47.89mm in length, 14.52mm in width and weighs 69.21g. Lead weights were used for a long period and lack many diagnostic features, so are difficult to date precisely although most are Medieval or Post medieval in date. A similar example can be found at SOM-BC7E70.

Part of the mouth of a socket from an unidentified object, possibly a Bronze Age axe or hammer, possibly a Medieval staff or similar. Only part of two sides remain and the corner between them so the full dimensions of the socket are unclear. All the breaks are old and patinated. The socket appears to have been square in section with slightly convex sides. The inside is smooth with a slightly white metakl sheen, probably from tin. The outerside is more corroded with a pitted green surface. At the mouth is a slight lip which projects more in places and maybe a cleaned casting flash. …
