Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two pieces of flint debitage, of uncertain Prehistoric date. Neither flake appears to have been retouched.
The first piece of debitage is a secondary blade fragment, 24.0mm long by 9.8mm wide and with three parallel removal scars running down its dorsal face. Both these scars and the removal of this flake appear to have been struck from the same direction, and although the bulk of percussion has not survived. Made of a translucent red/brown flint. It is 3.1mm thick and weights 0.70g.
The second piece is a primary flake fragment, 17.8mm long by 15.0mm wide and with no evidence fo…

A flint post medieval gunflint dating to the period c. AD 1650 - 1850. The gunflint is square in plan and trapezoidal in cross-section. It exhibits scaled abrupt retouch along three edges to trim the flake and scaled semi-abrupt reouch on the fourth side to create a wedge shape along one edge. There is evidence of crushing, possibly sustained during use, along the thinnest edge. The flint is a semi-translucent dark grey.
The gunflint measures 16.67mm in length, 17.02mm in width, is 5.82mm thick, tapering to 1.42mm in thickness and weighs 2.76g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable gunflint of post medieval date (c. AD 1600 - 1850). The gunflint is struck off a secondary flake and retains c. 30% cortex on the dorsal face. The gunflint is D-shaped in plan and triangular in cross-section. It exhibits a combination of long and short scaled semi-abrupt retouch along both mesal edges and some evidence of crushing, possibly from use. The ventral surface exhibits a series of closely spcaed conchoidal ripple marks, however, there is no bulb of percussion present. The flint is semi-translucent and dark brown in colour.
The gunflint measures 19.78mm in lengt…

A complete knapped gun-flint from a flintlock musket of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1600 - 1900.
The flint is broadly square in plan and is of the classic wedge shape in section. Short scaled semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch is present around three sides becoming longer in the centres of the left and right sides, the thin end of the wedge shape being left as struck. the large bulb of percussion survives, forming one angle of the wedge with the striking platform as the other. The flint is translucent dark grey with paler mottling.

Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published
Lithic implement described as 'a small, incomplete Acheulean handaxe dating to the Lower Paleolithic. Bifacially worked on a tertiary flake. The axe appears to have been roughly heart-shaped originally, with a rounded butt, curving inwards slightly, and a slightly pointed tip at the opposite end. A curved section is missing from one side of the tip. This appears to have occured following deposition as the edges of the break are still sharp. Both faces are largely covered with flaking scars. There is further finer, but irregular, retouch to some of the edges. Both faces have become smo…

A bifacially worked Lower Palaeolithic chert handaxe, dating to the period c. 500,000-150,000 BC. It is ovate in form, lenticular in cross section and has a slight reversed 'S' profile. It has been struck from an orange/brown chert that has extensive dark orange patination. Both faces have covering, scaled, semi-abrupt flaking. One face exhibits old damage in the form of a chip. The other face exhibits a large area where more recent damage has occured, evidenced by a break in the patination.
The handaxe measures 141.36mm in length, 92mm at its widest, 37.98mm in thickness and weigh…

Palaeolithic chert handaxe with a broken tip, possible originally of ficron form. The axe has a convex curved butt with creamy cortex remaining on one face. Shallow invasive parallel removals on both faces covering the entire faces with one large later flake removal, possible accidental damage, towards the butt on the side with cortex. More recent damage has also removed the point and part of the left edge on the same face, the paler orange of the original chert shows through in these breaks. The remaining surface is bright orange from iron staining and the chert is slightly granular …

Palaeolithic Acheulian chert handaxe of ficron type with an elongated tapering point and larger rounded butt. The point is formed with invasive shallow flaking and is pointed oval in cross section, more convex on one face than the other. There are several post deposition chips from the edges and the tip is missing to more recent damage. The point widens and thickens to the large rounded butt. The widening is a fairly consistant taper down the ficron with the widest point about three quarters of the way down the length. The thickness is more variable, one face appears almost complete an…
