Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete tertiary retouched flake of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake has a visible bulb of percussion on the ventral face which has been partially removed by the very large bulbar scar due to a flaw in the flint. The distal end has snapped, as has the proximal right corner. There is short scalar abrupt retouch at the proximal end of the left edge and along the remaining part of the right edge of the dorsal face. Towards the centre of the left edge the retouch becomes longer and semi-abrupt. The flint is light-mid grey in colour.

A secondary flake of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake is struck from a prepared platform with bulb of percussion and a visible bulbar scar on the ventral face and arises showing there were multiple previous removals from the same platform on the distal face. The right distal corner from the dorsal face has lost its patination and has short scalar abrupt removals, this is possibly retouch. The fact this potential retouch is unpatinated compared to the rest of the flake suggests this is later reworking. Due to the unpatinated area of possible retouch this might be modern da…

Eleven retouched flakes forming casual tools of uncertain function, undiagnostic but probably Neolithic or Bronze Age in date. 40.3 grams in total. a. Portland chert tertiary flake snap at distal end, notch created by retouch in the centre of the right edge on the ventral face. 3.33 grams. b. Snapped fragment of a large flake or blade. Dark grey flint, no cortex. Short to medium length, shallow, parallel retouch along the distal edge, very short scalar semi-abrupt retouch along the left edge and the proximal snapped edge, all on the dorsal face. 2.1 grams. c. Four retouched flakes; all have areas of long retouch but are not obviously a particular tool type and as such cannot be clearly dated. The large flakes suggest a Neolithic or Bronze Age date. 30.5 grams in total. a. Long flake struck off a core, arises on the dorsal face suggest it has been worked from the same direction but a different part of the platform. Flat at the proximal end, triangular in section at the distal end. Snap at the distal end, bulb at the proximal end. Notch at the proximal end of the right edge on the ventral face has some scalar short retouch or damage an…

A retouched distal end of a flake, of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Almost circular piece made on a thick flake of medium grey-brown flint. A retouched flake which is possibly a retouched core fragment. There is no visible striking platform on the flake, on the ventral face there is a clear bulb of percussion and a bulbar scar. There are long flake removals in both directions on the dorsal face, suggesting a Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake has been snapped before the distal end and has evidence of retouch along the right side of the dorsal face from the proximal end to the break. The retouch is short and scalar, which creates a projecting knotch c. 4.5mm suggesting the flake was being fashioned into a tool b…

Fragment of a secondary flint flake with small areas of retouch around the edge. The bulb of percussion has been removed by retouch but the percussion ripples are very clear on the ventral face. The facets on the dorsal face suggest the core was probably worked from several directions. There is a small amount of cortex (less than 5% coverage) on the distal end. Around part of the ventral end is short abrupt parallel retouch wile the rest has a hinge fracture suggesting the bulb end was removed by a break before retouching, perhaps to form a scraping edge. There are several other chips…

Four knapped flint flakes with areas of retouch, probably Neolithic or Bronze Age in date. 1: Middle part of a larger flake with breaks at both ends. The bulb of percussion has been removed by a break and retouch, possibly deliberately. The breaks at the distal end are larger and possibly accidental. The dorsal face suggests it came from a multi-platform core although the face has also been re-worked with invasive shallow scalar retouch. Down the proximal half of the right edge on the dorsal face is short, scalar, abrupt retouch becoming longer towards the proximal end and ending on…

Secondary flake with less than 5% cortex remaining, triangular in section in a light brown-grey flint. The bulb of percussion has been removed by snapping, probably deliberately, leaving a thin triangular ridge. There are two removals on the dorsal face with very small, semi-abrupt retouch along the left edge from the dorsal side with proximal end at the top. There is also very short, abrupt retouch on the right side along probable accidental breaks. It measures 43.1mm in length, 21.1mm in width and weighs 5.93g.

A knapped re-touched flint flake possibly later Neolithic to Bronze Age in date. A prominent bulb of percussion with large bulb scar and clear ripples of percussion are on the ventral face. There is original cortex surviving across the distal end. Aris and ripples on the dorsal face suggest multi-directional previous removals. Two knapped flint tertiary flakes, both with possible areas of retouch, possibly of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. both are dark grey flint with paler mottling. 1. Part of a flake. The bulb of percussion has been removed from the ventral face but percussion waves are still clear. Aris and ripples on the dorsal face suggest at least one previous parallel removal. There is extensive chipping around the edges on both faces, the chipping is very irregular and appears accidental. The blade has been struck off a platform with a clear bulb of percussion, bulb scars and ripples on the ventral face and scars from previous parallel removals from the same platform on the dorsal face. There is an irregular break at the distal end with some chipping across it. The edges have lost some large chips. A late Neolithic to early Bronze Age retouched flake, dating to c. 3300-1000 BC. This is a tertiary flake as it retians no cortex. The dorsal face has two sets of concoidal ripples, one radiating from a mesal side at the proximal end and resulting in a step termination. The other set radiate along the flake from the proximal to the distal end. There is long parallel semi-abrupt retouch along one mesal edge. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion at the proximal end and conchoidal ripples radiating towards the distal end, where there are two negative flake scars. There is an additon…

A flint retouched flake of probable Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2350 BC). The flake is lozengiform in shape and has been struck off a secondary flake. It retains cortex comprising c.5% of the dorsal surfac area along one mesal edge. The dorsal surface exhibits two parallel negative flake scars from previous flake removal running at a ninety degree angle to the bulb of percussion on the ventral surface, indicating a change in striking direction on the core. There is some evidence of frost fracturing on the dorsal surface. The flake exhibits short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch runnin…

A retouched tertiary flake probably Neolithic in date. It is broadly of elongated trapezoidal form with a 'butt' of straight sides, the side having tapered gradually from the wide end. The retouch varies on the dorsal face and is abrupt to one side, and more gradual at the other and the wide end. The shape of the flake is reminiscent of transverse arrowheads of the tranchet type but the cutting edge seems too thick for this purpose, though it may have been truncated. The function of this flake therefore cannot be given with precision.
