Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint chisel arrowhead of probable late Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The arrowhead is complete and measures 27.8mm by 26.4mm by 7.1mm. It weighs 4.6g. It has been made from a fairly thick tertiary (no remaining cortex) flake of light greyish-brown flint and is in a fresh condition with some minor edge damage. The dorsal surface has been fairly coarsely invasively retouched. This has removed the flake's striking platform and bulb of percussion. There is also some short retouch on the ventral surface, to sharpen the arrowhead's cutting edge.

Probable flint tranchet arrowhead, dating to the later Neolithic. The arrowhead is sub-triangular in form. The ventral face is fairly flat with prominent ripple lines, a small bulb and wide butt. There is long, scaled, low angle retouch along the left edge. The dorsal face is slightly convex with a large transverse flaking scar on the right. There is a roughly triangular section of invasive, low angle retouch at the proximal end. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour, with darker patches and lighter flecks. It survives in good condition, but the very tip of the arrowhead is missing. L…

The tip of a flint arrowhead of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The tip shows low-angle, covering, scaled retouch on both faces. The flint is light brown-grey in colour and is so finely worked that it is almost translucent around the edges. The small size of the fragment makes it difficult to determine the original shape of the arrowhead from which it originated.

An oblique flint arrowhead, probabaly dating to the later Neolithic. The arrowhead is sub-triangular in form, curving down at the proximal end to form an off-centre spur. The ventral face is smooth with semi-abrupt, short, sub-parallel removals along the right edge. There are also a number of low angle, invasive, scaled removals covering the spur at the proximal end, which juts down to the left. The dorsal face has one wide removal at the proximal end, with invasive, scaled retouch above this. There is also semi-abrupt, short, scaled retouch along the left side, curving down to the tip…

Probable flint petit tranchet arrowhead (or small tranchet implement), of later Neolithic date. The arrowhead is small and sub-rectangular in form, formed on a tertiary flake. The ventral face is smooth and slightly convex with limited abrupt, scaled retouch on the right, creating a wide edge. The dorsal face has a few removals in the middle, with abrupt, scaled retouch on the right, once again creating a wide edge. The proximal end is wedge shaped and formed from three removals. However, the central one of these lacks the shiny patina of the rest of the object, suggesting it may be du…

Broken fragment of an invasively retouched tool, possibly an arrowhead dating to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (3500-1500 BC). The remaining piece is almost triangular with two straight edges, one retouched and one possibly a deliberate snap, the third (right) edge is very irregular and appears to be formed of irregular breaks, the distal end is also broken. The straight snapped edge has removed the bulb of percussion and striking platform. Apart from along the irregular broken right edge the dorsal face is covered by shallow invasive semi parallel pressure flaking. There is also …

Broken fragment of an invasively retouched arrowhead dating to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (4500-1500 BC). The remaining piece is almost triangular due to breaks, about three fifths of the original outline survives. The point and part of the attachment end is lost, making it unclear what the original form was, possibly leaf shaped. Both the dorsal and ventral faces are covered by shallow invasive semi parallel pressure flaking. The arrowhead is made out of translucent light brown flint, some cortex is visible on the centre of one side.

Possible flint arrowhead of late Neolithic date. The object is sub-triangular in shape. The flint has a milky, speckled patina. The proximal end is missing. The break has exposed a greyish interior beneath the patination, suggesting that it occured post-deposition. There is semi-abrupt, long, sub-parallel retouch along the left and right edges of the dorsal face. The ventral face is fairly flat, with possible fine retouch along the right edge and the bulb is missing. The is evidence of plough damage in places along the edges and the very tip is missing. This is probably a fragment of …

A flint chisel arrowhead of late Neolithic date. The arrowhead is sub-triangular in shape. There is fine, short, sub-parallel, low angle retouch along the right edge of the dorsal face. Along the left edge of the same face is coarse, scaled, long, low angle retouch. The third edge has a single primary flake removed and no further retouch, creating a chisel-like effect. There are several larger flaking scars on the dorsal face, but the ventral face is largely smooth and flat. The bulb and butt have been removed. There are fairly strong lines of impact on the ventral face. According to …

Flint arrowhead of late Neolithic date. Tertiary flake struck using a hard hammer. Trapezoidal in shape. Invasive, stepped retouch on the dorsal face, with a narrow tranchet flake removed from the distal end of the dorsal face, creating a sharp, chisel-like cutting edge. The narrow proximal end would have been hafted, with the broad edge as the arrow tip. The arrowhead is narrow and fairly crude. The flint is light grey in colour with a milky patina and some orange staining.

A probable flint chisel arrowhead of later Neolithic date. The arrowhead measures 43.7mm by 25.6mm by 7.5mm and weighs 7.8g. It is a broadly triangular tertiary flake of mid to dark grey flint. It appears to be reasonably fresh and complete. There is irregular retouch on both dorsal and ventral surfaces and the wider end is thinner with a sharp edge. Although it is rather thick, it may be unfinished or simply a fairly crude attempt.

An incomplete flint arrowhead of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Only the tip survives. This has a rounded end and is oval in cross-section with fairly sharp edges. Both faces are covered with fine, invasive, scaled retouch. The flint is light brown in colour and slightly translucent. All faces, including the break are covered with a patchy, milky patina. Unfortunately, because the butt of the arrowhead is missing, its original form is difficult to discern and therefore it is hard to date it more closely than this.

Flint implement, probably an unusually shaped oblique arrowhead of late Neolithic date. The object is sub-triangular in form, but the side at the distal end curves inwards slightly leaving the two corners protruding, one wide and rounded and the other thinner, giving the object a slightly asymmetrical shape. Small flaking scars cover the dorsal face and the edges of the ventral face. Long, parallel, abrupt retouch at the distal end and patches of long, scaled, low-angle retouch along the left side, can both be seen on the dorsal face. On the ventral face there is fine, short, sub-paral…

Fragment from a knapped flint tool, probably a leaf shaped or possibly a barbed and tanged arrowhead or Neolithic to Middle Bronze Age date, c.4000-1150 BC. The piece has breaks around most of the edges with only part of either the butt or side complete so the original shape is unclear. It is however covered by invasive shallow retouch on both surfaces as seen on arrowheads. Mid-grey flint with paler mottling. It is now 22.1mm long, 13.9mm wide and 2.7mm thick; it weighs 1.03 grams.
