A base shard from a Roman black burnished ware vessel. Fairly coarse fabric. The outer surface is orange in colour with blotchy grey burnishing (or possibly slip). The inner margins are also orange, whilst the centre is dark brown. Occasional medium grained quartz and mica, with more frequent red and black iron ore and shale inclusions. Despite the oxidised exterior, this is probably fabric BB1, produced in the Wareham/Poole harbour region between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Base from a Roman Nene Valley ware beaker. The base iself is small (as is characteristic on vessels of this type), tapering inwards slightly above and then abruptly outwards to form the body of the vessel. A small portion of this remains in situ, but the majority is now missing. The fabric is hard and fine in texture and light grey-brown in colour. It is coated in a dark brown-black slip. The fabric is hard, very fine and pinkish in colour, with few visible inclusions and patches of glossy reddish slip remaining on both faces. It is likely to be of South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) manufacture, which was primarily exported to Britain between AD c.40-c.100 (Tyres 1996, p.112). Three rim shards from Roman Central Gaulish Samian Ware vessels, probably dating from the mid 1st to mid-3rd century. All were found together and have very similar fabrics. Their smooth, fine fabric is light orange in colour with a ‘satin’ gloss orange-red slip on both the inner and outer surfaces. The fabric has abundant fine mica frequent fine limestone and fairly frequent larger red and brown iron ore inclusions. The shards are too small to determine the original diameters of their vessels.
