A rim shard from a Roman black burnished ware vessel. The rim of the vessel is triangular in section and appears to have turned outwards very slightly. Light coloured sandy fabric, with dark grey/brown inner and exterior surfaces. Plentiful mica and sparse quartzite inclusions. Unfortunately the small size of the shard and its misshapen nature makes it difficult to determine the original diameter of the vessel. Length: 29.99mm, Width: 18.31mm, Thickness: 13.67mm.

One body shard from a Roman greyware vessel. The shard is fairly fine and slightly sandy in texture. It is buff-grey in colour with a slightly darker, smooth outer surface. The inner surface is much abraded. The outer surface has a grooved line decorating it. The main inclusions are abundant poorly sorted fragments of white and clear quartz, with occasional large darker particles, possibly of iron ore. Two rim shards from Roman greyware vessels, probably both jars. Both with a hard, sandy, mid-grey fabric, slightly smoother on the outside. Inclusions include fairly sparse fine mica, sparse large grains of white quartz, dark particles (probably of iron ore) and numerous small rounded, fairly irregular voids. The second shard has generally higher numbers of inclusions, but other than that they appear to share a similar fabric type. The first shard has a upright, everted rim, whilst the second has a largely flattened, tapering rim that is only very slightly everted on the outer edge. …

A rim shard from a Roman black burnished ware vessel. Very similar in form to black burnished ware type 3., listed in Excavations at Greyhound Yard, Dorchester 1981-4 (Woodward et al. 1993, p.230-1). These are ‘cooking pots/storage jars with very everted rims’ (ibid, p. 231). Woodward et al. (1993) suggest a date range from the 3rd century AD possibly up to the early 5th for these. The fabric is dark-brown in colour, with the remains of dark brown-black burnishing on the outer and inner surface, which is now heavily worn. Occasional medium grained quartz and mica, with more freq…

A rim shard from a Roman black burnished ware vessel. The wide, plain rim suggests that it is similar in form to black burnished ware type 51., listed in Excavations at Greyhound Yard, Dorchester 1981-4 (Woodward et al. 1993, p.236-7). These are ‘large, round-bodied, open bowl[s, with] plain bead rim’ (ibid, p. 237). Woodward et al. (1993, p.237) are unclear of the date range of such vessels, but suggest that they are known to pre-date the 3rd century. The fabric is dark-brown in colour, with the remains of dark brown-black burnishing on the inner surface, and wipe marks on the out…

Five body (and one rim) shards from Roman black burnished ware vessels. All five fragments are of a fairly similar fabric. The first two are slightly thicker and coarser, plus darker (grey-black) in colour. Both of faces of these shards appear to have been burnished. The third shard is slightly thinner and finer, but also has two burnished faces. The final two shards are also thinner and finer, but are only burnished on the outer surface, which is slightly lighter in colour with a buff patch on one. The first shard appears to have come from the rim of a vessel, but it too small in size…

A body shard from a Roman black burnished ware vessel. A small amount of wedge-shaped rim does survive, but not enough to take an accurate diameter measurement. There is a strip, approx. 30mm wide, running around the centre of the outer face of the vessel, which is decorated with comb marks in a herring-bone pattern. Very similar in form to black burnished ware type 13., listed in Excavations at Greyhound Yard, Dorchester 1981-4 (Woodward et al. 1993, p.233). These are round-bodied, open bowls, some, such as this one, with wedge-shaped rims. Those vessels with the upright rim are thoug…

A base shard from a Roman black burnished ware vessel. Fairly coarse fabric. The outer surface is orange in colour with blotchy grey burnishing (or possibly slip). The inner margins are also orange, whilst the centre is dark brown. Occasional medium grained quartz and mica, with more frequent red and black iron ore and shale inclusions. Despite the oxidised exterior, this is probably fabric BB1, produced in the Wareham/Poole harbour region between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Base from a Roman Nene Valley ware beaker. The base iself is small (as is characteristic on vessels of this type), tapering inwards slightly above and then abruptly outwards to form the body of the vessel. A small portion of this remains in situ, but the majority is now missing. The fabric is hard and fine in texture and light grey-brown in colour. It is coated in a dark brown-black slip. Wipe marks may be seen in the slip on the bottom of the base. The fabric is tempered with abundant fine quartz sand and small dark black and brown flecks. This ware was widely distributed across Brita…
