A rim shard from a Roman samian ware vessel. The rim is straight. The fabric is hard, very fine and pinkish in colour, with few visible inclusions and patches of glossy reddish slip remaining on both faces. It is likely to be of South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) manufacture, which was primarily exported to Britain between AD c.40-c.100 (Tyres 1996, p.112). A rim (?) shard, probably from a Roman Oxfordshire ware vessel. However, the shard is in poor condition, with discoloured and corroded slip in places on its outer surface making the fabric difficult to identify. It is orange in colour and the slip, where is survives, appears to be a glossy red. The fabric is fairly soft and sandy with a micaceous matrix and few other visible inclusions (although these may be obscured by the corroded slip). Three shards from Medieval externally glazed earthenware vessels. All were found in the same field and are of a very similar fabric. This is fairly hard, medium-grained and slightly chalky. It is grey-white in colour, with a slight pinkish tinge in places, perhaps from the soil, and is tempered with plentiful rounded quartz. A mottled greenish-yellow glaze can be seen on the outer surface. A rim shard from a late Medieval thin-walled earthenware vessel. The rim is roughly triangular in cross-section and slightly everted. The original diameter of the vessel would have been around 12cm. The outer surface is grey-brown in colour, while the core is pinkish-brown. The fabric is fairly hard and gritty and is tempered with plentiful quartz (<1mm) and rare dark iron ore (<2mm).
