Eight body shards from Roman black burnished ware vessels, all found in the same field. Too small and abraded to determine the original vessel form. All have a hard, granular grey-brown fabric, some with a darker, burnished outer surfaces, whilst on others this has worn away. The fabric generally contains plentiful quartz inclusions (

Six shards of tile, probably of Roman date. All were found in the same field, together with a vessel shards of Roman and later date. However, all are abraded and small, making them fairly undiagnostic. They all have a fine, sandy, red-orange earthenware fabric. 1. A rim shard from a Roman samian ware vessel. The rim is straight. The fabric is hard, very fine and pinkish in colour, with few visible inclusions and patches of glossy reddish slip remaining on both faces. It is likely to be of South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) manufacture, which was primarily exported to Britain between AD c.40-c.100 (Tyres 1996, p.112). Length: 30.36mm, Width: 23.74mm, Thickness: 4.54mm, Weight: 1.59g

Slighty everted rim. Hard orange fabric with sparse quartz, iron ore and mica inclusions. Patches of red-brown, fairly coarse, slightly glossy slip remaining on both surfaces. Laminar fracture. Possibly of Central Gaulish, standard Lezoux, or East Gaulish, Trier, fabric, which would indicate a date range of c.120-c.250 (Tyres 1996, p.112-113). Six body shards from Roman greyware vessels, found in the same field. All have a fairly similar hard, fine, thin-walled fabric, with a pinkish-brown core, showing streaks of grey in the centre, and darker grey outer surfaces. The fabric is tempered with varying quantities of poorly sorted rounded quartz (

Eleven rim shards from Roman greyware vessels, from the same field. All have a medium/coarse, sandy, but fairly hard fabric. This varies in colour from light grey to orange-brown, though all are of a similar colour. Some have grey outer surfaces and brownish cores. Most are grog tempered and also contain, to varying levels, black and red iron ore, quartz, occasional calcareous material and sparse fine mica. However, the fabric varies considerably, even within the same shard, hugely making it difficult to describe each individually. All of the rims are similar in form. They are everte…

A shard of a Roman greyware vessel that appears to have been deliberately shaped, perhaps to make a vessel lid. The other two edges are straight, but probably represent later breaks. The fabric is medium grained and hard. It is mid-grey in colour and tempered with plentiful rounded quartz (<1mm), plentiful poorly sorted dark iron ore (<3mm), rare mica (<1mm), and occasional small chalky pieces (<1mm). A rim (?) shard, probably from a Roman Oxfordshire ware vessel. However, the shard is in poor condition, with discoloured and corroded slip in places on its outer surface making the fabric difficult to identify. It is orange in colour and the slip, where is survives, appears to be a glossy red. The fabric is fairly soft and sandy with a micaceous matrix and few other visible inclusions (although these may be obscured by the corroded slip). Tyres (1996, p. 178) dates Oxfordshire slipped ware to AD c.240-c.400. The shard is possibly from the rim of a straight rimmed vessel, although its…

A small rim shard from a Post-Medieval internally glazed earthenware vessel, of a locally produced coarse sandy ware. Unfortunately the shard is too small in size to take an accurate diameter measurement. The fabric is brownish in colour with the powdery remains of a yellow glaze on the inner surface. It is tempered with plentiful fine sand, occasional larger fragments of dark and red iron ore (

Three shards from Medieval externally glazed earthenware vessels. All were found in the same field and are of a very similar fabric. This is fairly hard, medium-grained and slightly chalky. It is grey-white in colour, with a slight pinkish tinge in places, perhaps from the soil, and is tempered with plentiful rounded quartz. A mottled greenish-yellow glaze can be seen on the outer surface. The fabric is very similar to that of a spouted pitched described by Hodges and Mainman (1984, p.41) and thought to be of 12th century date. The source of this fabric was not indentified, but may be…

A rim shard from a late Medieval thin-walled earthenware vessel. The rim is roughly triangular in cross-section and slightly everted. The original diameter of the vessel would have been around 12cm. The outer surface is grey-brown in colour, while the core is pinkish-brown. The fabric is fairly hard and gritty and is tempered with plentiful quartz (<1mm) and rare dark iron ore (<2mm). A 15th century vessel with a simlar rim can be seen in Allan (1984, p.65, fig.28 no.828). Length: 35.90mm, Width: 22.44mm, Thickness: 6.81mm, Weight: 5.51g
