Shard from a Medieval earthenware vessel. The shard is slightly curved and could represent a portion of the vessel rim, but is too abraded to confirm this. The fabric is grey in colour, with an oxidised orange-pink inner surface. It has fine, hard dark and light grey, and sparse quartz and mica, inclusions. There is a slight ridge running around the outside edge. The method of manufacture is unclear from such a small fragment.

Three shards from Medieval externally glazed earthenware vessels. All were found in the same field and are of a very similar fabric. This is fairly hard, medium-grained and slightly chalky. It is grey-white in colour, with a slight pinkish tinge in places, perhaps from the soil, and is tempered with plentiful rounded quartz. A mottled greenish-yellow glaze can be seen on the outer surface. The fabric is very similar to that of a spouted pitched described by Hodges and Mainman (1984, p.41) and thought to be of 12th century date. The source of this fabric was not indentified, but may be…

A rim shard from a late Medieval thin-walled earthenware vessel. The rim is roughly triangular in cross-section and slightly everted. The original diameter of the vessel would have been around 12cm. The outer surface is grey-brown in colour, while the core is pinkish-brown. The fabric is fairly hard and gritty and is tempered with plentiful quartz (<1mm) and rare dark iron ore (<2mm). A 15th century vessel with a simlar rim can be seen in Allan (1984, p.65, fig.28 no.828).

Both surfaces are coarse. The fabric contains frequent medium sized grains of well rounded clear quartz and white quartzite, rare large fragments of flint, large calcareous and occasional micaceous inclusions. Probably of 12th-14th century date.
