A copper alloy probable bead of uncertain date. The bead is circular in plan and trinagular in cross section with a flat inner side central ridge running around the outer side. A break at one point indicates where two ends of a rod were hammered around and butted together to form the bead. It measures 17.5mm in external diameter, 9.2mm in internal diameter, and a maximum of 7.7mm wide by 4.6mm thick; it weighs 7.60g.
Simple copper alloy beads of this type were popular from the Bronze Age to the Medieval period. SWYOR-761CA0 anf SUSS-1090B1 on this database are similar. It is also p…

Flat, slightly oval lead weight with lumps of another material, stone or copper alloy set into each side. The weight is 26.7mm by 24.3mm and 10.2mm thick; 8.4mm excluding the inset material. It weighs 42.46 grams.
Lead weights in copper alloy casings are known from the 11th - 12th century, e.g. HAMP-EEBC91 but the material on this example appears to be set it. Other lead weights with copper alloys set into them are known but these have an item on one side only and it is always a decorative piece of copper alloy. It is not clear if the material in this case was incorporated deliberat…

Opaque turquoise blue glass bead of uncertain date. The bead is oval in plan and circular in section with slight rims around the holes. It has a rough sided hole c.2.4mm in diameter running though it. It is 8.9mm long and 9.2mm in diameter and weighs 0.89 grams.
Irregularity in the shape and a spiralling grain suggest it was made by being wound on a pontil. Although turquoise blue beads were popular in the Roman and Early Medieval period, those examples are usually more globular, distinctly wider in diameter than they are long. Guido (1978:70) comments that stray examples of such be…

One end of a gold strip broken into two pieces of unknown date. The complete end is squared off with slightly rounded corners. The strip widens gradually and consistantly from 6.0mm at the complete end to 12.9mm at the break. The centre is slightly recessed for some of the strip leaving raised edges but it is otherside undecorated. The strip was apparently rolled up when found but was straighened by the finder. it is now 24.3mm long and 0.3mm thick at the thinnest point (in the centre of the broken edge), 0.9mm thick at the thickest point on the edges. It weighs 1.30 grams in total.

Copper alloy ring shaped piece of a larger item of uncertain date, probably Roman - Post Medieval. The piece is now a ring with a D-shaped section, flat inner side and convex outer. The outer side is decorated with alternating narrow raised transverse lines and broad sections with oval swellings . There is an irregular, worn break to one side of the ring and possibly also to the other side suggesting it was once part of a longer tube shaped piece. The decoration does not continue onto the extensions to the sides. It is 19.7mm in diameter, 10.4mm wide and 3.7mm thick; it weighs 6.65 grams.

Cast lead vessel repair (pot mend). It is roughly oval in plan and H-shaped in section with two irregularly shaped outer sides, one much larger than the other, joined by a smaller central section. The smaller side is slightly convex and was probably on the outerside of the pot. In the 1.4-1.8mm wide groove created between the outer sides there is a patch of material which appears to be iron pan rather than the original pot, unless the pot was of iron which has completely rusted leaving no metallic material remaining. It is 32.5 mm by 27.4mm, 9.2 mm thick and weighs 30.80 g.

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two pieces of copper-alloy casting waste. They are both slightly concave as though they have fomed on a surface. Though with irregular sides both are broadly of quadrilateral form. Both surfaces of both pieces are rough with cooling lines suggesting they were formed from molton metal.
The pieces are not distinctive and could be of any date from the Bronze Age onwards although they are evidence for specialist, high temperature, metal working.

A copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. It is formed of a flat rectangular arm with rectangular cross-section, broken transversely following old damage and also bent upwards at the break. At the other end the arm curves through ninety degrees to end in a terminal expanded at its base. There are three knops at the outer edge as the piece turns. Those closest to the broken end seem to be the truncated ends of a rounded attachment loop integral to the arm. The object is decorated on both faces with an incised median line from which diagonal lines emerge, offset compared to …

A fragment from a gold ingot with sub-rectangular cross-section and a number of hammer marks on the two largest faces and granular breaks. There are a number of scuffs and scratches to the surface.
The fragment has parallels with ingots previously identified as prehistoric date (including Trowse with Newton, Norfolk: 2002 T99; and the more substantial finger-shaped ingot from East Claydon, Buckinghamshire: 2013 T850). It can, on the balance of probabilities, be identified as being of prehistoric date.
As an object of precious metal of prehistoric date, the fragment of a probable…
