A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy mount, possibly a propeller shaped belt stiffener of late Roman date. The mount consists of a central circular element (diameter 16.4mm) flanked to one side by a sub-rectangular tab. There is a transverse break at the circumference of the roundel where a possible equivalent tab might have emerged. The roundel is decorated with longitudinal ridges, those towards the edge curved to follow its shape. The grooves between are decorated with incised rocker arm. The tab begins with a transverse ridge, beyond which the main field has two longitu…

A possible incomplete copper-alloy strap fitting or vessel escutcheon of Roman date, missing most of its body due to old breaks. The remainder consists only of an oval loop attached to an integral horizontal bar on one side. The loop and bar are D-shaped in section with a flat back. The loop is very worn to one side. The bar has angled ends and is divided into two along its length by an incised line. The lower part of the bar (furthest from the loop) is decorated by regularly spaced indented diagonal lines, each ending in a dot, giving a twisted cord effect to this part. There is an o…

Cast copper alloy strap fitting or harness fitting, probably of Roman date, possibly of late Iron Age date. The fitting is broadly T shaped with knops at the end of the cross bar and a old break at the end of the hooked vertical bar. The knops are domed and oval in section with flat sides where they meet the bar and rounded outer sides. The vertical bar runs straight at first before curving back then flattening and starting to curve forward again just before the break, originally forming a hook. It also narrows along this hooked section and is very worn on the front. The bars are both…

A possible cast copper alloy sword belt fitting of early post-medieval date. The incomplete fitting measures 36mm by 18.6mm by 9.1mm and weighs 4.6g. It consists of an incomplete flat plate with a forwards-curving hook at one end. This curves back on itself to become parallel with the plate and terminates in a stylised zoomorphic knop. Just above this terminal there is a rivet hole in the plate. This contains the remains of a copper alloy rivet. Probably medieval copper alloy strap loop. It is sub-rectangular in shape. One of the longer sides is straight, with a flat inner edge and rounded outer edge. The ends of this side protrude slightly beyond the corners of the loop. The other sides are rectangular in section. The other longer side has a break in the middle, where a portion is missing. The object is undecorated. It lacks the usual rivet holes or projections of strap loops, but probably functioned as one nonetheless. Similar examples can be seen in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 232), fig.147, suggesting a similar fourteenth ce…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy fitting, probably from a sword belt, with pendant still attached. Only the tip of the fitting survives. This has a slight hollow near the break on the reverse. Above the hook are two moulded lobes extending from the sides. Below this the integral hook extends downwards, bending round and back up to form a loop. The pendant has a large attachment loop at the top. It extends downwards a short way before going in slightly and then culminating in a rough tear-drop shape. The upper surface of the pendant shows some evidence of moulded decoration, but this is …

A copper alloy post-medieval sword belt fitting. The fitting is roughly trapezoid in shape, culminating in a hook at the base. Found attached to the hook was a small copper alloy ring with a break in it. The fitting is highly erroded making it difficult to determine whether it is decorated. There are two holes through the centre of the trapezoidal section both containing the remains of highly erroded iron rivets, which would have allowed the fitting to be attached to a leather strap originally. The fitting is fairly similar (though slightly simpler) in form to those shown in Read (2008…
