Two shards of Roman fine grey ware, found close together. Consisting of one rim and one base shard of a similar fabric. Both have grey inner and outer surfaces, with darker grey patches that are abraded in places, and slightly lighter cores. The main inclusions are sparse fine mica, abundant clear quartz and sparse light chalky fragments of various sizes. The base shard has part of the gently curving body of the vessel attached. The rim shard is lipped. However, its small size makes it difficult to determine the original form of the vessel. 1. Rim shard Length: 51.49mm, Width: 21.8…

A shard from the base of a Roman, Nene Valley Ware vessel, dating to the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. The fragment consists of over half of the base of the vessel and a small portion of the sides. The fabric is off-white in colour with a sandy texture. Both the inner and outer surfaces have a dark brown-black slip colour coat that is missing in places, particularly on the inside surface. Abundant very fine quartz sand inclusions. The base is small with a slight neck directly above, before the sides of the vessel begin to widen, suggesting that it may have come from a beaker, flagon, jug or…

A shard from the base of an Oxfordshire Ware vessel. Around half of the base survives. The fabric is orange-buff in colour with sparse sub-angular iron ore inclusions varying widely in size and sparse large chalk lumps set in a micaceous matrix. Dark red-brown slip decorates the outer surface. However, this is heavily abraded and missing in places. Some of surviving slip shows a slight sheen on a few small patches. The base has straight, angled sides and a hole in the centre of the bottom. It would have been quite tall. The lack of further fragments makes it difficult to determine the …
