Translucent pale blue-green (aqua) glass bead of uncertain date. The bead appears to be oval in plan and oval in section giving a globular shape with slightly flattened top and bottom. There is a circular hole through the centre with a slight chip to one side. Spiralling indented lines are visible on the end and sides where the glass was wound around a pontil to make the bead. The glass indents into the the holes at the end visible from the photo. The hole is 3mm in diameter. The bead is 10mm long and 12mm in diameter. The spiral lines suggest the bead was hand made by winding bu…

One fragment of burnt clay which is probably a piece of daub. Orangey-pink external layer with buff areas. Sand inclusions, c.5% of total and occasional soft orange inclusions, fired daub or plaster. Irregular shape with a shallow C shaped groove, probably an impression from the wattle to which this would have been stuck. 13.97 grams. Such material is hard to date out of context and could be Iron Age - Post Medieval but given other material found near by it is probably Roman.

Cast lead alloy globular weight with the stubs of corroded iron suspension loops embedded at the top and bottom. The weight is now sub-spheircal with damaged areas at the base and top covered with iron corrosion. The stubs of loops appear to be made of circular sectioned wire which may run completely through the weight. The weight is 26.9mm in diameter, 22.3mm thick, excluding the loop, 26.1mm including and weighs 83.41 grams, just under 3 ounces. The loops suggest it or use with a steelyard. Similar bi-conical and globular lead weights with iron loops are usually dated to the Roma…

An incomplete cast copper alloy T-shape brooch of early Roman date. The surviving part of the brooch measures 23.6mm in length and weighs 6.1g. One side of the cylindrical wings and part of the upper bow are missing. The wings would have held the axis bar for a hinged pin, which is also missing. The end of the surviving side of the wings is decorated with a single circumferential incised line. The forward projecting bow has a D-shaped cross-section. The upper part is decorated with four vertical ridges, two in the centre, which meet part way down the bow, and one along each edge. The b…

A rim shard from a Roman samian ware vessel. The rim is straight. The fabric is hard, very fine and pinkish in colour, with few visible inclusions and patches of glossy reddish slip remaining on both faces. It is likely to be of South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) manufacture, which was primarily exported to Britain between AD c.40-c.100 (Tyres 1996, p.112). Eleven rim shards from Roman greyware vessels, from the same field. All have a medium/coarse, sandy, but fairly hard fabric. This varies in colour from light grey to orange-brown, though all are of a similar colour. Some have grey outer surfaces and brownish cores. Most are grog tempered and also contain, to varying levels, black and red iron ore, quartz, occasional calcareous material and sparse fine mica. However, the fabric varies considerably, even within the same shard, hugely making it difficult to describe each individually. All of the rims are similar in form. They are everte…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete coiled copper alloy snake-form ring. The ring is formed from a single piece of wire coiled four times. The outer face of the ring has a textured surface, presumably intended to look like 'snake-skin'. One end of the wire culminates in a snakes head, the other curls around the outside and then inside of the ring, before tapering to form a 'tail'. The precise function of the object is uncertain, as the 'tail', which curls inside the ring, would make it uncomfortable to wear as a finger ring. The ring is most likely to be of Roman date, when snake form jewellry was popular. …
