Medieval copper alloy Jetton issued at Tournai, V / cross potent with flowers alternating with C's springing into quarters from inner circle, c.1400-1510 AD. The jetton is a variant of Barnard no.79 (1916:112) and Mitchiner no.734 (1988:240), the latter suggests a date around 1500 for the type (ibid: 236). This example has same obverse and legends as the published type but the reverse is a variant with two of the quatrefoils replaced with C's. The jetton has been pierced with five irregular, sub-circular holes arranged roughly in a pattern with one in the centre and four in an almost square around it. The holes are old and worn. It is 19.9mm in diameter, 0.9mm thick and weighs 1.52 grams. The form of piercing is similar to modern buttons but the design is clearly that of a Medieval jetton.

Struck during the years between Charles (VII) dauphin establishing his seat at Bourges in 1418 and his ascent to the throne in 1437 when he obtained Paris (Mitchiner 1988, p.190). Up until 1418 jettons were produced by a central Parisian mint, leading to a certain uniformity amongst them (ibid.). However, when France became divided following the defeat at Agincourt in 1415 Charles controlled mints that were independant of Paris, leading to a new degree of diversity amongst the jettons that they produced (ibid.). These early crown jettons appear to be fairly uniform in design, the crown usually being decorated and the reverse having a border formed from four arches (ibid. pp.179-182).
