Medieval English 'Wardrobe' jetton with a shield of Evreux and Naverre / cross made of four fleurs design, c.1344-1400 AD. Small flan type without outer legend. This obverse type was issued in France by the counts of Evreux and Kings of Navarre (Mitchiner 1988:166-7), it was then copied on English wardrobe tokens cf Berry 1974: plate 7, no.3 where it is categorised as type 1D and Barnard (1981, p. 105) no. 57. The reverse is different from either of the quoted examples but is found on other wardrobe tokens cf Mitchiner ibid:119 no.255a and Berry (ibid) no. 4. Mernick and Algar (2001) …

Medieval English copper alloy jetton of the sterling bust type. Bust/three armed cross design, c.1300-1310 AD. Mitchiner (1988:102) no.131 is similar with a different border design. There is a central hole, common on these jettons to prevent them being silvered and passed as coins.

Medieval English copper alloy jetton with a shield on the obverse and a sterling cross and pellet design on the reverse. The shield is divided into quarters the 1st and fourth are checky and the 2nd and 3rd have an unclear design. There is a punch mark in the centre of the reverse. It is not paralleled in the usual sources but is similar to other serling jettons and rougher contemporary pieces, some of which may be official but at the cheaper end of the market. cf Mernick and Algar (2001:224,) no 50 which has a similarly better made reverse with a crude obverse and is dated to the …

Medieval copper alloy Jetton issued at Tournai, V / cross potent with flowers alternating with C's springing into quarters from inner circle, c.1400-1510 AD. The jetton is a variant of Barnard no.79 (1916:112) and Mitchiner no.734 (1988:240), the latter suggests a date around 1500 for the type (ibid: 236). This example has same obverse and legends as the published type but the reverse is a variant with two of the quatrefoils replaced with C's. This reverse variant is not listed in Barnard (ibid), Mitchiner (ibid) or Mernick and Algar (2001).

Medieval copper alloy jetton, type unclear; possibly four keys arranged in a cross, a pascal lamb or a different cross on one side. The other side is illegible. The jetton has been pierced with five irregular, sub-circular holes arranged roughly in a pattern with one in the centre and four in an almost square around it. The holes are old and worn. It is 19.9mm in diameter, 0.9mm thick and weighs 1.52 grams. The form of piercing is similar to modern buttons but the design is clearly that of a Medieval jetton.

Copper alloy late Medieval French jetton. Struck during the years between Charles (VII) dauphin establishing his seat at Bourges in 1418 and his ascent to the throne in 1437 when he obtained Paris (Mitchiner 1988, p.190). Up until 1418 jettons were produced by a central Parisian mint, leading to a certain uniformity amongst them (ibid.). However, when France became divided following the defeat at Agincourt in 1415 Charles controlled mints that were independant of Paris, leading to a new degree of diversity amongst the jettons that they produced (ibid.). As a result of this Tournai …

Copper alloy French crown jetton. Jettons were primarily used as reckoning counters. The earlier crown jettons are thought to have been introduced during the reign of Charles V (1364-80), though only achiving widespread popularity at a later date (Mitchiner 1988, p.179) during the reign of Charles VI (1380-1422) (ibid. p.175). These early crown jettons appear to be fairly uniform in design, the crown usually being decorated and the reverse having a border formed from four arches (ibid. pp.179-182). Few of this early date seem to have writing across the body of the crown or a more compl…

Medieval French copper alloy jetton of the Shield of France ancient type. Shield/ triple stranded cross fleury design. Similar examples are illustrated in Mitchiner (1988:172), no. 433-434b. Probably issued under Charles VI (1380-1422) and dated to the early 1380's during the process of coinage and jetton reformation. The legend differs from the given examples which should read AVE MARIA GRACIA PEN (or PLI); this example has the repeating nonsense inscription IEREDE (or G) suggesting possibly a later production date or production at Tournai.

Medieval English copper alloy jetton, round based shield of bearing three lions passant in tressure of three arches / cross moline design. Pierced through the centre. On edge of the corner there appears to be an old break, probably as a result of plough damage and at this point the edges have slightly bent. The jetton combines two reverses from the sterling bust series and is thought to be contemporary with them c.AD 1280-1340. Mitchiner (1988:111) no.198 appears very similar.
