Post Medieval cast copper alloy pot foot and part of the leg. The leg and foot are D-shaped in section with a flat back and convex front; the leg is broken off above a transverse collar with an old break. The remaining section of leg has three prominent ribs running down it, one centrally, one to each side with smaller ribs between, making five ribs in all. The prominent collar is rounded in section with worn remains of a cable pattern. The flaring foot has four raised ribs running down the front. The base of the foot is rounded. Rim fragment from a late Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy vessel. The rim flared out from the vessel wall, none of which survives. The top edge was straight and plain with a simple rounded edge but only a short section survives. Both faces are heavily sooted but the inner side appears smoothed where there is no soot. a rolled copper alloy sheet rivet goes through the wall adjacent to one break. The rivet has a flattened head on the inner face and projects further from the outerface, presumably where it held a repair patch across the break. The fragment is 29.8mm in widt…

A rim fragment of a medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel, now of irregular trapezoidal form. The thickened rim is slightly bevelled and thickened internally. The curve of the rim is very gradual. There is some pitting on both surfaces and some smoothing externally. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Butler and Green (2003, 15) state 'there is evidence that (cast copper alloy) metal cooking vessels became increasingly common during the 13th and 14th centuries'. Although earlier copper alloy vesse…

A rim fragment of a medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel, now of irregular sub-rectangular form. The fragment appears to be the everted rim of a cooking vessel approximately 200mm in diameter at the flat top. It has broken around the slightly oblique return into the vessel's body, in a straight line at one side and diagonally across the rim at the other. The cross-section reveals a 'bubbly' quality to the casting. The external face is darker, presumably from sooting. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.1200-1700 for serving and cooking…

A rim fragment of a medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel, now of irregular sub-triangular form. The fragment appears to be the everted rim of a cooking vessel approximately 70mm in diameter at the flat top. It appears to have broken before the return. The rim is thickened very slightly internally. Externally is a low longitudinal casting ridge with a flaw that seems to have been repaired using a copper-alloy rivet. This external face is darker, perhaps from sooting. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.AD 1200-1700 for serving and cooking. Bu…

A cast copper-alloy foot probably from a post-medieval cooking vessel. The object terminates in a simple, plain foot of triangular cross-section, effectively a continuation of the leg, but divided from it by a prominent transverse ridge. The break is essentially transverse, and located just above the ridge. The back is flat and the front sides angled. The object has become corroded post-deposition, and is largely a variable dark-grey colour.

A cast copper-alloy foot probably from a post-medieval cooking vessel. The object terminates in a slightly thickened and expanded plain foot of triangular cross-section with rounded corners, effectively a continuation of the leg. This leg/foot does not possess a transverse ridge; instead the foot is emphasised by a slight waist just above. The break is diagonal, located above the waist. The back is flat and the front angled to each side. The object has become corroded post-deposition, and is largely a variable dark-grey/balck colour with areas of lighter corrosion product.

A foot from a post-medieval cast copper-alloy cooking vessel, probably a cauldron. The foot is triangular in cross-section with a flat back. The foot is significantly tapered, which may be the result of wear. It measures only c. 9.1mm wide at its tip. It is notably worn to both sides. The leg is decorated with three prominent longitudinal ribs, the central one the most prominent, flanked by lower ribs to each side. Retained at the top of the leg is the curved inner surface of the vessel itself, with worn edges at the breaks. The fragment is of a dark-grey colour, possibly the result o…

A Post Medieval copper alloy pot leg, dating to the period c. AD 1500-1700. The leg is broadly triangular in cross section, the inner surface being flat and the outer surface formed of three conjoined convex ribs. The leg terminates downward in a flared, hoof-like foot, separated from the leg by a raised collar. The object has a grey-orange patina. The leg measures 47.48mm in length, 34.39mm in width, 21.19mm in thickness and weighs 99.10g. Butler et al (2009: 4) defines this type of pot leg as a type C, which was in use by the 16th century and almost universal during the 17th.
