Treasure case 2010 T277: Not Treasure, returned to finder A small incomplete gold ingot of uncertain date. The object is sub-rectangular in shape, though crudely formed. It is rounded at one end, with a rough break at the other. It survives in fairly good condition apart from a few scratch marks on each face. B ecause of its undiagnostic nature, the find cannot be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Length: 27.42mm, Width: 7.93mm, Thickness: 4.12mm, Weight: 8.33g Anna Booth Finds Liaison Officer for Somerset

Dimensions: Length: 7.89mm Thickness: 1.05mm Width: 5.19 mm Weight: 0.33g Discussion: According to specialists at the British Museum this fragment is not diagnostic and not certainly prehistoric. One end of a gold strip broken into two pieces of unknown date. The complete end is squared off with slightly rounded corners. The strip widens gradually and consistantly from 6.0mm at the complete end to 12.9mm at the break. The centre is slightly recessed for some of the strip leaving raised edges but it is otherside undecorated. The strip was apparently rolled up when found but was straighened by the finder. it is now 24.3mm long and 0.3mm thick at the thinnest point (in the centre of the broken edge), 0.9mm thick at the thickest point on the edges. It weighs 1.30 grams in total. …

A fragment from a gold ingot with sub-rectangular cross-section and a number of hammer marks on the two largest faces and granular breaks. There are a number of scuffs and scratches to the surface. The fragment has parallels with ingots previously identified as prehistoric date (including Trowse with Newton, Norfolk: 2002 T99; and the more substantial finger-shaped ingot from East Claydon, Buckinghamshire: 2013 T850). It can, on the balance of probabilities, be identified as being of prehistoric date. As an object of precious metal of prehistoric date, the fragment of a probable…

Description: A fragment from a gold bar shaped ingot with a sub-oval cross section that has flattened upper and lower faces and convex sides. At each end the piece has been hammered top and bottom to thin it. It has then been broken leaving a hackled irregular break at each end. One break shows more clearly the multiple marks from thinning and has also become wider as it was thinned. There are several scratches to the surface in addition to pitting and marks from abrasion. Dimensions: The ingot is 14.2mm long, 6.2mm wide by 4.3mm at one end and 7.9mm by 3.5mm at the other. It weighs 4…

Description: Roughly rectangular flat gold bar, tapered and cut at both ends. This has apparently been hammered at both ends, as it has tapered vertically towards both ends, while also expanding sideways. This may be a result of the cutting process, as a slight lip at each end suggests that the bar was cut most of the way through with an implement that was not particularly sharp, and then snapped off. Dimensions: 15.5mm (l) x 6 (8)mm (w) x 3mm (th). Weight: 3.89g Discussion: The original form of the bar is consistent with Anglo-Saxon ingots of the 7th century, including th…
