One end of a gilded silver strap fitting with gold, garnet and blue glass inlays, dating to the first half of the seventh century AD. The piece consists of one end with attachment rivets, and the stub of one side of a broken probably rectangular plate with narrow sides around a probably rectangular hole in the centre. The breaks appear patinated and are probably not recent. At the complete end is a wide transverse strip with a row of six rivet holes through it (for this description numbered 1-6). Three of these holes (in positions 1, 2 and 5) contain the remains of silver rivets wi…

An incomplete Early Medieval copper alloy harness fitting dating to the period c. AD 1000-1100. The fitting is sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross-section. There is a central trapezoidal aperture so that the object forms a loop. The inner edge is wider and has a recent break on its side where a projecting arm would have attached the loop to the body of the cheek piece. The fitting is very worn and there is a green patina on the surface. Square or trapezoidal loops of this type are believed to be characteristic of harness cheek pieces which date to the 11th century (Willia…

2017 T957: Submitted for valuation Description: An Early Medieval cast gilded silver mount, probably a strap-slide, decorated in the Winchester Style. The mount is sub-hexagonal in plan, with a flat reverse. The design on the front is moulded in high relief, comprising a symmetrical pair of addorsed birds looking backwards. Their wings curve downwards into the mouth of an inverted animal mask, before passing out of its ears to terminate in a volute at each lower corner of the mount. A trilobed acanthus frond issues from the animal mask's mouth, filling the space between the bir…

Traces of iron rivets survive in all four lobes. The front of the boss is decorated with a slightly irregular saltire, with two incised lines defining each arm. Dimensions: length 28.5mm; width 28.2mm; thickness 5.3mm; weight 10.09g. Read (2001: 16, no. 1…

Late Early Medieval or Medieval cast copper alloy fitting, probably a strap junction. The piece is incomplete, missing c.15% to one side, but is otherwise symmetrical. It is lozenge shaped with rounded lobed corners and two cusps on each side between the corners. The back is flat and the front convex with a prominent central pellet. In one complete corner is a small circular hole. In the other two corners the holes are possibly mis-cast, one is filled with copper alloy, possibly from casting, the other with a white substance that may have accumulated in the dips. The fourth corner is …

An incomplete copper alloy early medieval zoomorphic strap fitting dating to the period c.AD1000 - 1100. The strap fitting has a Ringerike style plate with bifurcated attachment-end with one fleur-de-lis terminal. The other terminal is incomplete due to an old break approximately half-way along the length of the fitting. The remaining terminal exhibits a single drilled attachment or rivet hole which has been drilled from the back. There is a circular perforation between the concave sides which then tapers into a triangular terminal with projecting animal-head which tapers into a curve…

A Medieval copper alloy strap slide, probably dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The strapslide is zoomorphic and decorated in a highly debased version of the late Anglo-Scandinavian Urnes or Ringerike styles and depicting an animal's head viewed from above, rudimentarily cast in high relief and with further details incised and punched into the surface. The strap slide consists of an off-centre sub-lozengiform boss, domed and with a concave reverse, with two ring-and-dot punches depicting eyes. From the top edge, away from the eyes, is a short, sub-rectangular projection with an indented t…

An Early Medieval to Medieval copper alloy belt, casket or book-hasp, probably dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The object is broadly sub-rectangular in form tapering from 7.8mm to 5.2mm, where it ends in a rounded terminal. It is generally D-shaped cross section but with the terminal flattened. Through this flattened section runs a circular rivet hole with the remains of an iron rivet still in situ. Above the rivet the cross section widens into a raised band, which is in turn surmounted by a pair of arches in decoration which is probably zoomorphic in character, the arches representing the…
