Treasure case 2017T22: Acquired by RAMM, Exeter Description: [1] A complete Middle Bronze Age copper alloy palstave. The butt end of the palstave is rectangular in plan, 60.2mm long and 22.3mm wide and 4.6mm thick at the butt. The septum is also rectangular, with pronounced side flanges which are lozengiform when viewed in profile. In profile the flanges widen from 28.6mm at the stop, reaching a maximum of 35.5mm after c. 20.4mm before tapering into the butt. At the stop the septum is 23.1mm wide and 16.5mm deep, with an acutely angled stop ridge. At the stop the palstave…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Middle Bronze Age palstave dating to the Acton- Penard phases (c. 1500 - 1100 BC). The palstave has a narrow butt and from the butt expands in both width and thickness into a high flange on either side flanking a central U-shaped septum. The septum exhibits a hollow on at least one face faces just above the stop ridge. This is caused by air trapped in the mould during the casting process. On one side of the palstave, adjacent to the stop ridge, is a broad U-shaped loop with tapering ends. There is a tapering triangular indent with concave sides running from the sto…

County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint barbed and tanged arrowhead, probably dating to 2500-1500 BC. The arrow head is sub triangular in plan with a square tang. The arrowhead has been worked bifacially, with long, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch around it's edge, except for on the mesial edge of the right barb, where the retouch is low angle. The arrowhead is assymetrical in plan, and the right barb is much better defined than on the left, where the tang and barb still curve into eachother, the left mesial edge extends further than on the right. The centre of the dorsal face is smoot…

It has a single outer, curved edge, and two further straight edges that taper to a rough point. The dorsal surface, exhibits four negative flake scars from previous removals. At the proximal end there is evidence of platform preparation in the form of long parallel low angle retouch, while the distal end exhibits long, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch.. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of six retouched chert flakes of probable Bronze Age date (c.2350-1600 BC) . Two of the flakes, are tertiary retaining no cortex, while the remaining pieces retain between 5 and 25% of their cortex. All of the ventral surfaces, have large bulbs of percussion and strongly defined, closely spaced conchoidal ripple marks idicative of the use of a stone hammer. All the flakes are broad, with evidence of short sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch running along one mesal edge, probably for use as scrapers. One (top right in photo) has long parallel semi-abrupt retouch around the cu…

A Bronze Age retouched flint, probably a scraper dating to the period c. 2350-800 BC. The artefact is struck off a secondary flake, as the dorsal surface retains 25%of its cortex, it is broadly triangular in cross section and ovoid in shape. The bulb of percussion on the ventral face has been almost removed by bulb scarall the edges. All the sides have bad chipping, some later damage but some may be deliberate blunting to make the opposite edges easier to use. The flint is light grey in colour with a series of buff to cream coloured inclusions, and some traces of iron staining fro…
