The mount is circular in plan and flat/sub-rectangular in cross section. On its reverse are two circular studs one at its centre and one near the edge. The central stud is c.2.8mm in diameter and projects 3.2mm from the back of the plate. It has a rounded end. The outer stud is also c.2.8mm in diameter but projects less than 0.5mm from the back of the plate before terminating in an irregular broken surface. The front of the mount has chipped and…

County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete mount of uncertain type, possibly Roman in date c. AD 43-402 consisting of a flat plate and an integral rivet. The plate is rectangular/flat in cross section. It survives as two rounded lobes, each being slightly larger than 1/4 of a circle. They meet each other along one of their straight edges. At this point the plate is slightly bent inwards leaving a channel between the two lobes. The reverse of the plate is slightly higher at this point as a result although it is otherwise plain. The plate is broken where each lobe's second straight edge might have been. This is …

An Iron Age copper alloy mount, possibly from a tankard with zoomorphic decoration dating to 100 BC to 80 AD. The mount is a probably cast sheet of copper alloy, semi circular in plan and curved in cross section such that the two corners of the semi-circular are further back than the centre. There are three holes, one near each corner and one near the lowest point of the curve. The holes are slightly irregular, in particular the lower one which is larger and possibly worn. A circular belt or strap mount, probably of Medieval date The object is sub-circular in plan and stepped-dome in profile with a convex front, and concave reverse, surface. It is pierced by a central hole (2.3mm diameter) used for fixing the mount. The outer surface has engraved decoration. Four engraved lines forming a square (c.13mm by 13mm) define a central area within which the mount's profile is more rounded. Outside the square the curve of the mounts profile is more gradual. Projecting from each edge of the square to the outer edge of the object are a series of radiating en…

County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete copper alloy object, probably a gilded openwork mount, of possibly late Early Medieval date. The piece is broadly triangular with a old, patinated break along the shortest side. It is mostly flat with rounded sides and slightly thickened towards the centre. The long slides are slightly convex curved and converge towards the complete terminal which is expanded into two curved leaves with raised borders and an almost circular indent between. It is possible this indent was a drilled hole and a third leaf of a trefoil has been lost beyond it. In the constriction between the sid…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy mount probably dating to the second or third centuries AD The lower half of the mount is pelta or crescent-shaped, with curved tips that terminate in rounded knops. The central section of the crescent extends upwards ending in a rounded terminal. To either side of this terminal extend curved arms which end in knopped tips mirroring those below creating a 'C' shaped openwork on each side. This C-shape is emphasied as the arms, points and curves between them which form the border of the C-s are slightly raised. The right curved tip of the arm has been…
