An incomplete Late Bronze Age copper alloy tanged chisel, dating to c 1150 - 850 BC. The handle and blade is missing. The chisel was cast in one piece but can be described in two sections. It has a rectangular tang in subsection which abuts the ovoid-sectioned, collared handle stop of the chisel blade. At the other end would have been the chisel blade beyond the tang. At this point there is a worn break. This artefact has a dark orange brown patina. Tanged chisels, which date from c. 1150-850 BC, are known from several hoards and as isolated finds; …

Fragment of a Bronze Age tanged chisel of Late Bronze Age date, probably of Wilburton or Ewart Park metalworking industry, dated to c. 1150 – 750BC. Only a small section of the tang survives but is clearly square in section. It flares slightly to the collar which is sub oval in form. The blade flares below this collar to give a blade width of 29.02 mm. The blade faces are near-flat and thin gradually towards the edge.  The surface is pitted with a mid-brown patina. On one side an incised line runs parrallel to the angled edge of the blade, c. 3mm from the edge. It…

A fragment of Late Bronze Age cast copper alloy blade/sword dating from c. 1000 to 800 BC. The blade fragment has a surviving length of 45.9mm, with a surviving width of 35.58mm. It is broadly trapezoid in plan and is lenticular in cross-section. The blade edges are heavily eroded leaving no original surface. Both cutting edges are worn and incomplete and the perpendicular edges to these are broken so that the original length of the blade is unknown as well as the position of this fragment along it, though it is likely between the hilt and the middle of the sword a…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable flint scraper of probably Bronze Age date or AD 2500 to 800. The scraper is struck off a tertiary flake and retains no cortex. The scraper is sub-rectangular in plan albeit with one slightly curved mesal side. Every edge is heavily chipped and damaged but behind this damage is evidence of semi-parallel abrupt retouch along the majority of their ventral surface while the distal edge demonstrates this semi-abrupt retouch on its dorsal surface also. There is a very prominent bulb of percussion and the flake has removed a large part of a striking platform with it, giving it …

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The tip of an incomplete cast copper alloy socketed spearhead, of Middle to Late Bronze Age dating (c. 1200-c. 800 cal BC). What survives is narrow and triangular. The blade also has a pronounced mid rib on both sides extending to the tip of the spear, which remains pointed. In cross section the mid rib is lozenge shaped with a maximum thickness of 5.8mm. To either side of the mid rib are possible smaller and subtler ridges probably indicating the presence of channels along much of the blade. The spear head is covered in a thick dark green copper patina that is chipped/abrad…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A possibly incomplete Middle Bronze Age cast copper-alloy palstave (axehead) probably of unlooped type. The palstave is very corroded, with some losses at its extremities and little of the original surface remaining. The butt is relatively short and terminates at an angle, possibly indicating an old break. The septum is quite distinct and thinner than the blade suggesting that this is a palstave rather than an earlier flanged axe (Schmidt and Burgess, 1981, p.115); the stop ridge, while quite worn and corroded, is still evident, especially on one side. The flanges widen slightly from …

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy Late Bronze Age socketed axehead of unknown type, probably part of the Ewart Park metalworking assemblage dating from c. 1000-800BC. The axe is an elongated rectangle in plan, narrowing slightly from the socket at one end to a narrowest point in the centre before expanding gradually to a flared convex cutting edge that is 46.7mm wide. It is triangular in profile tapering from the socket to the cutting edge. Its socket is broadly sub-square in cross section measuring 28.2mm by 29.9mm and has a collar around the mouth. There is a single integral side loop set …

Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An artefact often grouped under the term of harness fittings of Late Bronze Age date, and probably of Ewart Park (c. 950 - 750 BC) or Llyn Fawr (c. 750 - 500BC) metalworking tradition. In plan the artefact is slightly oval measuring 23.0mm by 20.3mm in diameter. Placed at the centre of the object on each side mirroring each other are two circular concave depressions measuring 8.2mm in diameter that are each approximately 1.5mm deep. However, the object is 4.8mm thick such that these depressions do not pierce through from one side to the other. The artefact has a terminal knop pr…

Object type: GOUGE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A near complete copper alloy socketed gouge corresponding to Needham's (1996) Period 7, and dated to c. 950 - 750BC The remaining portion is a short length of the socket with a tapered U-shaped blade. The piece is distinctly pointed oval in cross section with slight projecting ridges running down each side, probably the remains of casting flashes. The object tapers in width and thickness from its socket to a rounded cutting/gouging edge which is concave on one of its surfaces. The gouging edge has worn well rounded chips at its tip and on one edge. The object bulges slightly at …

A copper alloy fragment, possibly from a Bronze Age blade such as a rapier or dirk. The fragment is trapezoidal in plan and broken on two edges. At the wider end, the item's width is 14.4mm From this end the original surviving edges of the item subtly curve outwards before curving in again to the second broken edge of the item which is also the point of its minimum width, 9.3mm. This broken end is now slightly concave. In cross section the artefact is a pointed oval with a maximum thickness of 2.2mm and, one one face, distinct carinations between the central part, representing abou…

Object type: BORER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Neolithic or Bronze Age flint awl or borer dating to 3300 to 1000 BC. The piece is made on a tertiary flake with a prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The ripples and aris from previous removals on the dorsal face suggest the flint core was worked in at least two directions. Short semi-abrupt scalar retouch runs around the distal end and the left edge on the dorsal face. This left edge has been shaped by retouch into a distinct projecting slightly blunt ended point for boring holes in wood or hides. The piece is 21.9mm long, 24.1mm wide including the projecting poin…
