One half of a Post Medieval two part toggle clasp, possibly from a sword belt of 16th to 17th century date. This part is the eye section which would have had a bar on the second section slotted through it then swivelled. The openwork eye is rectangular and forms one end of the piece. It has a thickened transverse bar at one end, dividing it from the rest. There is an offest bar, raised above the line of the rest of the piece in a convex curve, at the other, outer end of the eye. To one side of the eye is an integral circular loop through which a part of the sword belt would be hooked.…

One half of a Post-medieval cast copper-alloy two-part sword-belt toggle-clasp dating from the 16th to 17 century. Toggle-clasps have two sections which lock together, one with an eye and the other with a toggle-bar; this artefact is the section with a toggle-bar. The piece has a main plate with a bar extending from one end on the front of which is an integral D-shaped plate which therefore sits forward of the main plate and acted as a the toggle. Part of a copper alloy strap fitting, probably of 14th cnetury date. The piece is formed of a rectangular piece of copper alloy sheet, now bent in on itself. One end is complete apart from a broken corner and has a circular hole in each corner for attachment. The other end was curled over a bar with a central slot cut through it leaving two tabs. The tabs have both broken at this bent over end but probably originally continued at least half the length where there is a smaller attachment hole on the front plate, pierced from behind. The bar is formed of a thicker rectangular piece of c…

An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy strap-fitting dating to AD 1350 to 1400. This piece of fitting was likely part of a bar mount with only one half remaining. The bar mount would have originally consisted of two parallel arms that were linked at the base by a semi-circular suspension loop, now worn thorugh at the base. The loop has worn through and only one arm of the bar mount is present. The arm is flat from its base up to the start of the loop (c.30mm from the base). There are two rivet holes, one is clear of obstruction and the other appears to be cemented closed. There i…
