A fragment of a pair of cast copper pipe tongs of probable seventeenth century date. The fragment measures 39.5mm by 8.8mm by 3.1mm and weighs 3.2g. When complete, the tongs would have consisted of two arms with a central hinge. The surviving fragment is one of the arms' terminals, which has been moulded to represent a human hand. At other end of the fragment there is a short forward curving U-shaped section, above which the arm has broken. This end of the tongs would have been used to pick up burning embers to light a pipe.
