Object type: SPEAR
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron spearhead of probably late Medieval date. The blade is complete and a broad leaf shape with convex curved sides widening evenly form the point to the rounded base of the blade. A rounded rib runs from the socket about half way along the length of the blade on both sides; the ribs thicken towards the base but appear solid. The blade is otherwise flat and even in thickness. Due to the level of corrosion it is hard to identify the width of the sharpened edges, if any. The socket is conical and tapering, continuing the line of the ribs but only hollow until it meets the blade. The en…

County: Somerset

Iron spearhead with an elongated leaf shaped blade which appears to narrow then widen again to broad projecting points (ricasso) above the socket. The blade is pointed oval in section with a slightly thickened centre but no midrib. It is 35.5mm wide at the widest point and 26.6mm at the narrowest section above the projecting points. This narrow section is damaged but does appear to be an original feature although the alternative, that it originally continued straight before curving out to the projecting points, cannot be ruled out. It is 30.8mm across at the points and 3.5mm thick. Th…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset

A small fragment of copper alloy, probably from the tip of a spearhead of middle to late Bronze Age date: 1500-800 BC. The fragment is lentoid in cross-section, creating a slight ridge along the centre of both faces. It is very worn and pitted and the edges are damaged. It is difficult to see whether the end of the socket is visible within the break due to this damage and the small size of the fragment. The form of the original spearhead is impossible to determine and so it is difficult to date beyond middle to late Bronze Age. Length: 27.21mm, Width: 15.65mm, Thickness: 2.87mm, We…

Three iron spear heads, thought to be of Iron Age date. One small head and two larger ones. All in fairly good condition - one with a small amount of wood in one socket. Treasure report from Rachel Seagar-Smith (Wessex Archaeology): A rectangular post-built structure F245 defined by at least six postholes was located in area A. The structure measured 5.00m by 3.60m across and was aligned NNE to SSW. The postholes were tightly packed with stones and contained the remains of square section posts measuring up 0.20m by 0.40m across that had clearly been burnt in-situ. A cache of th…
