Part of the side and mouth of a Late Bronze Age socketed axe, probably of the Ewart park phase 950-750 BC. The fragment consists of the mouth moulding and adjacent part of one side with very worn breaks around all edges. At one point he edge has bent at 90 degrees to continue onto the front or back face before breaking. At the mouth is a thick triangular cross sectioned mouth moulding then a smaller, shallow D-shaped cross section moulding. Adjacent to this second moulding is a side loop, D-shaped in profile and pointed oval in cross section. Slight casting flashes remain along the s…

An incomplete cast copper alloy socketed axe head dating from the Late Bronze age. The axe head's socket, and an undeterminable amount of its face have been lost to an old break. The break is such that one side of the face is up to 18.1mm longer than the other. The lower half of the object and the blade survive more intact, however it is clear that the axe once had a thick brown patina which has only remained on a minority of the object. As this has worn away we are unable to see the axe's original surface, and as such, some diagnostic elements are difficult to make a decisive ju…

An incomplete cast copper alloy socketed axehead dating from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age (c.800-700 BC). Around two thirds of the axehead's collar and a portion of the centre of one of the wide faces has been lost through a large scar running from the socket of the axe down two thirds of the object that is likely the result of being hit by a plough. The breaks are patinated but unworn, suggesting the damage happened some time ago.The lower half of the object and the blade survive more intact such that is possible to be confident of the axehead's form. The axe's…

A complete copper alloy Late Bronze Age socketed axehead of unknown type, probably part of the Ewart Park metalworking assemblage dating from c. 1000-800BC. The axe is an elongated rectangle in plan, narrowing slightly from the socket at one end to a narrowest point in the centre before expanding gradually to a flared convex cutting edge that is 46.7mm wide. It is triangular in profile tapering from the socket to the cutting edge. Its socket is broadly sub-square in cross section measuring 28.2mm by 29.9mm and has a collar around the mouth. There is a single integral side loop set …

The fragment measures 8.94mm long, 30.97 wide and has a maximum thickness of 5.55m. It weighs 3.96g. The fragment is 'D' or crescent shaped in plan with a curved cutting edge, and has a straight inner edge. In cross section this inner edge is a pointed oval. The blade edge thickens evenly either side from the cutting edge towards the main section of the axe. Internally the blade is solid at this point. The blade edge has one small…

A fragment of a late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe head, probably dating to 1100-800 BC and deliberately broken as part of ritual deposition. Only the cutting edge and adjacent section with the end of the socket survive. The cutting edge survives intact and runs in a shallow convex curve 39.7mm long, the blade tips flare outwards slightly but both the tips and blade edge are damaged and chipped. There are some possibly hammering marks on one face from sharpening. The surviving part of the body appears to have had flat faces and convex sides, each side being triangular in cro…

An incomplete Late Bronze Age socketed axehead dating to the period c. 1100 - 800 BC. The axehead is trapezoidal in shape and has a narrowed, triangular profile. It exhibits an old break just above the socket aperture. The remains of the socket are sub-rectangular in shape. The cutting edge is straight and unexpanded. Fragment of a cast copper-alloy socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date. Only the blade and and a small part of the socket survive, the remainder is now missing to old breaks. The fragment is trapezoid in form, widening towards the blade. It is triangular in section, tapering to the convex curved cutting edge. The cutting edge is extremely worn due to post-depositional corrosion with no clear bevelled edge and rounded, broken corners. Late Bronze Age socketed axe head, a variant of the Taunton-Hademarschen type with oval rather than square mouth.
