A fragment of a cast copper-alloy rowel spur of post-medieval date (c. 17th century).. The fragment comprises the rowel box and part of the neck. The rowel box is elaborate with rounded end perforated for an iron axis bar, now corroded. Beyond this is a collar, then side with triangular panels, externally bevelled. Below the rowel box the neck, of angle-neck type, is a rounded U-shaped curve with simple moulded collar at both ends. At the spur's 'sides' end the collar is expanded, from it emerging a second U-shaped curve which curves in the opposite direction before being truncated du…

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy rowel spur of probable 17th-century date. The surviving part has a maximum length of 76.8mm, a maximum width of 30.9mm and a width of 15.4mm.It is 2.5mm thick in the midline. It weighs 14.07g. The straight rowel box has two projections in the terminal which would have held the axis bar for the missing rowel. The slot is now c. 10.2mm deep giving the maximum radius of the rowel. The arms of the spur have D-shaped cross-sections, with a flat internal surface and a curving external surface; one is now only vestigial with most lost to an old break. The …

Post medieval five pointed rowel from a spur, probably of 17th century date. The five points are evenly spaces and pointed oval in section. They widen towards the centre where the junctions of the points are emphasised with incised lines. There is a circular hole in the centre filled with the corroded remains of the iron bar on which the rowel rotated. The surface is corroded, obscuring any decoration but there are possible traces of lines of punched dots and crescents along the points. It is 36.8mm by 35.1mm and 3.5mm thick; it weighs 7.14 grams.

Post Medieval cast copper alloy rowel spur fragment. The rowel box, neck and part of each side remain, the rest of the sides and both terminals are missing to old breaks. The two arms of the rowel box are D-shaped in section, flat on the inner side. Although the ends are rounded there is no sign of piercing for the cross bar on which the rowel rotated suggesting they are incomplete. Below the rowel box the short neck is decorated by a narrow then wider collar. The sides are plain and a flattened D-shape in section with a flat inner side and taper in width gradually from the point it m…

Neck and box of a cast copper alloy rowel spur, probably of 17th century date. The spur has broken across the neck which is D shaped in section and very curved. The sides to attach it to the boot are completely missing due to this old break. At the end of the neck is a widened collar with a straight top and semi circular lower half; the straigh top is sectorated with four transverse indents. From the collar projects the offset rowel box. The box is oval in section at the inner end, it widens out then has a slot thorugh the centre leaving two arms with D-shaped sections. The arms termi…
