Copper alloy pennanular ring with overlapping ends, possibly an earring. The piece is oval in section, flatter on the outer and inner faces and narrows and thins from 4.2mm across by 3.1mm thick at the centre to 1.1mm across by 1.7mm thick at the inner of the overlapping ends. The outer of the overlapping ends is split into four prongs 3.1mm long which are now squashed together. The ring is 19.1mm across and 18.2mm wide and weighs 2.57g. The four prongs presumably once created a socket, either to hold an item such as a jewel or connecting item or, possibly, the other end of the rin…

Roman copper alloy ear ring of Allason Jones type 1. The ear ring is roughly circular in plan and circular in cross section. It tapers to pointed terminals which overlap slightly. One termiansl is split slightly and this, along with joins running around the ring, indicate it is made of rolled copper alloy sheet. It is 20.8mm by 19.7mm and 2.9mm thick (excluding the operlapping terminals); it weighs 2.05 grams. Allison Jones (1989) suggests this is the most common type and continues in use through the Roman period, AD 43-410.

Silver lozenge-shaped bead, hollow, with integral suspension loop and ring; hole at other end. Decorated with applied filigree circles and loops. Though the decoration is reminiscent of that found on 16th Century dress pins reported through the Treasure Act, this object seems to me to be machine-made and consequently much later in date. The form suggests a 19th Century date and my guess is that this is part of an ear-ring of relatively recent manufacture. It does not therefore come under the 1996 Treasure Act (Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections, The British Museum).
