A Medieval copper alloy quillon (dagger guard) fragment probably from a ballock dagger of late Medieval to early Post Medieval date (c. AD 1400-1650). The guard is vesical shaped in plan (oval coming to points at the narrowed ends. In profile it is irregularly shaped as the left and right narrow edges of the guard have semi-oval protruding regions emphasised by incised decoration that serve to separate these features from the main body of the guard almost as if these were wings. The main body of the guard has is decorated by further incised lines. On one long edge these run …

An incomplete copper alloy object, probably a dagger pommel, probably dating from the Late Medieval or early post-Medieval periods. The object has a flat pentagonal face from which its sides initially flare to a rounded edge which represent the object maximum diameter (20.33mm.) From this point the pommel curves inwards before starting to straighten into a solid shaft at which point the object terminates in an irregular and much abraded break. It has a dark green patina. The large circular face is 20.3mm in diameter, it is 11.7mm thick, and weighs 19.57 grams. A similar example …

An incomplete cast copper alloy dagger dating from the Early Bronze Age, that is c.2150-c.1600BC. In plan it is broadly triangular with a straight sides tapering to a rounded and now abraded point. It is broadly flat in cross section, with a defined 'edge' which is seperated from the rest of the blade in places by a slight ridge and in other places just by the way it narrows more sharply to the outer edge. There is a shallow central rib on both faces running from the hilt towards the point, it is less visible on one face where it is covered by corrosion products (see below) but seems …

An incomplete cast copper alloy dagger cross-guard of probable 15th to early 17th century date. The guard is formed of central lozenge with two arms (quillons) that extend from from the sides and expand in width and thickness, trumpet-like, towards flat terminals. The central lozenge is flat and sub-rectangular in cross-section. There is a subtle ridge running along the top and bottom faces of the lozenge. As the quillons expand towards their terminals these ridges develop and the quillons eventually become hexagonal in cross section. The cross-guard is 47.2mm long (from to quillon ti…

A broken and incomplete possible medieval cast copper-alloy dagger guard (c. 15th century AD). It consists of a central hollow block with one long side and one short side effectively missing. This block has a large central aperture 12.1mm max. length, 4.6mm min. width. This aperture seem to widen, though without the side to measure against it is difficult to provide a maximum width. From the extant short end a thick arm (?quillon) emerges which immediately begins to bifurcate. Each prong is circular in cross-section once separated, c. 7.5mm in diameter. A copper-alloy probable hilt-plate from a medieval dagger. The object is broadly oval in plan with trapezoidal cutouts at the centre of each long edge. It has a broadly central triangular perforation with small rounded notched expansion at the wider end. The object has a shallow curve in profile. It is corroded with a mid-green patina where it survives; light-green corroded metal is also visible. Such hilt-plates tend to be given a 15th-century date, although they could be earlier.

A copper-alloy dagger guard (quillon) of late medieval date (c. 15th century). It consists of a broadly lozengiform copper alloy bar which expands at either end and widens in the centre to accommodate a rectangular hole (now blocked) - this would have taken the tang of the dagger. Extending to one side and from either end of the main bar, are two joined arches (resembling an inverted number three). The object is plain but corroded. Where it survives the patina is grey in colour; the underlying metal is red/brown. The dagger guard is very similar to refs. 628 and 629, illustrated…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy item, possibly the pommel from a large dagger or sword of possibly Early Medieval but probably Medieval date. The piece is a solid terminal which starts to hollow out before ending in an irregular break around all sides. It is rectangular in plan with flat faces and sides. The sides are angled in gradually at first then more abruptly to form a shallow point at the terminal. There is no hole through the terminal which may suggest this is the side rather than end of a pommel. It is 16.3mm long by 26.3mm wide by 15.9mm thick and weighs 29.26 grams. Due t…
