A flint core possibly dating to the Mesolithic period, or otherwise the Neolithic period, c. 10000 - 2350 BC. A single platform bladelet core of irregular shape, but tending towards conical. Made from a piece of mottled dark grey and light grey flint with a high gloss patina. There is a small area of cortex remaining. The rest of the "conical" surface is covered in multiple bladelet removal scars. The flakes have been removed from a single prepared platform. Dimensions: 37.72 mm x 24.27 mm x  24.31 mm Weight: 24.81 g

A possible core rejuvenation flake, likely dating between the Late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic periods (7000-3500 B.C.). The flint is semi-translucent and grey-brown in colour, with two small white patches and a medium gloss patina. It is a secondary flake as a small amount of cortex remains along one edge. The flake is sub-triangular in shape. The shorter of the three edges is a flat, where the flake terminates in a step fracture. The second edge is thicker, exhibits some scars, and a small amount of cortex. The third edge has …

A Mesolithic or Neolithic (c.8000-2400 cal BC) core fragment. The core fragment is made of a tertiary fragment of medium grey flint which has lighter grey fleck and patch inclusions and has a semi-glossy patina. One side of the core is a lighter mottled grey colour and cracked probably from having been burnt. The fragment is conical in shape with a sub-oval base from which 5 sides rise up to form a cone. The fragment has been the bottom of a larger core which has subsequently been struck off the core transversely to give the second fragment a flat base from which to knap further flak…

A flint core fragment probably dated to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age period. The core is a medium-small sized single platform conical flint core, probably dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000-2400 BC). The core is of a light grey with frequent off-white mottled conclusions, and a darker grey band on one side. It has small patches of orange staining from local iron deposits in the soil. It is approximately D-Shaped in plan, and sub-rectangular in profile and cross section. The striking platform has a single flake removal taken horizontally to provide a flat, smooth and even …

A fragment from a flint core of indeterminate form, probably dating to the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, (c. 2700-1600 BC) The core is of a dark mid grey flint with mottled white inclusions and brown striations but is otherwise glossy. It retains its reddish orange cortex on one of its larger surface. No striking platform is now visible on the core. Instead it has fractured around a natural imperfection at the centre of the core containing quartz crystals. This damage makes it hard to identify the form and date of the core. However, several visible removal flakes can be id…

Two fragments of flint cores of Mesolithic to Bronze Age date. Both appear to have been used to produce blade like pieces with repeated removals from a prepared platform. Due to the size of the pieces these blades, at least the last to be produced were very short. The dark grey piece (13.47g) is sub-conical with cortex left on one side and parallel removals from an upper platform. The beige-brown piece (35.68g) also has cortex left along one side but has a broken with a large section, possibly 50% or more, missing to a impact in the centre of the upper platform. There are the scars fo…

A collection of three chert cores of probable Mesolithic date (c. 10,000-4000 BC). 1) The first piece retainins a thin layer of nodular cortex covering about 20 per cent of the surface. The area of cortex is irregular in shape but the rest of the core is conical. Flake and bladelet removal scars cover approximately 80 per cent of the non-cortex walls. They appear to have been removed in the same direction, from the slightly concave striking platform at the top, which shows obvious signs of dressing. The chert is dark red in colour. It measures 60.0mm long, 39.2mm wide, and 24.8…

A collection of three flint cores of probable Mesolithic date (c. 10,000-4000 BC) produced during the process of bladelet manufacture. The first core (left in the photographs) is irregular in shape, but appears to have been conical prior to accidental fracture. Thick, nodular cortex remains on about 15 to 20 per cent of the surface. Part of a flat striking platform survives, from which some of the bladelets have been removed . Other bladelets have been removed from another platform, to the right, at a 45-degree angle to the first one. The surface of this second platform is concave…

Fragment of a larger core with damage on the ventral fance and proximal end. On the dorsal face scars from multiple previous parallel removals, small and large, suggest there was a prepared platform at the proximal end, now missing. The break on the ventral face has started in the centre and therefore appears to be accidental or frost damaged. There is an area of cortex at the distal end covering c. 20% of the surface. The entire piece is 58.7mm by 52.5mm by 19.1mm thick and weighs 49.33g. Given the other material found in proximity it is likely to be Neolithic.

A collection of six Mesolithic to Early Neolithic (c. 8000 - 3500 BC) flint core fragments. One at least of which appears to have been struck off a beach pebble, retaining at least 50% of its cortex on its outer curved edge. Two of the other pieces have, between 5% and 10% of their cortex remaining. The remaining three pieces, have no evidence of cortex remaining. All of the cores, show evidence of narrow parallel negative flake scars, for the production of blade like flakes, which is more indicative of Mesolithic and early Neolithic flint technology. All of the core fragments, have e…

A fragment of a flint core, probably Mesolithic and dating to the period c.9000-4000BC. The core is semi-cylindrical in shape, and narrows considerably along its length to a rounded point, it has a semi-circular cross section and two bipolar striking platforms one at the proximal and the other at the distal end.The striking platform at the distal end is now partially removed due to an old worn break. The dorsal surface has three narrow parallel negative flake scars indicative of the production of Blades/ Bladelets. The flint is a dark grey in colour and has a small patch of cortext…
