A cast copper alloy casting jet or "gate" with two stumps of sprues of possible Late Bronze Age date. The jet is made of a circular body from one side of which are two projecting sprues placed on opposite edges of the body. One is sub-circular in cross section and conical, the other is D-shaped in cross section. The jet is 23.8mm in diameter on its body and 7.8mm thick, the sprues project a maximum distance of 15.3mm from the back of the body. The fragment weighs 17.35 grams. Casting jets are waste products which form at the top of a two-piece clay mould when the molten metal h…

A single piece of irregularly shaped copper alloy casting waste of uncertain date. The piece weighs 24.62 grams and is approximately sub-rectangular. It has a possible linear edge on one side and three flat surfaces placed at angles to each other almost forming one half of a hexagon in profile. However, the surfaces opposite these, possibly inner surfaces, are very irregular such that this does not look like the socket for an object. It is instead interpreted as an irregular waste product from casting. The fragment is 27.8mm long, 35.4mm wide and c.14.8mm thick. Although unda…

Piece of lead and copper alloy, probably casting waste. The piece is trapezoidal in shape with irregular surfaces. It is mainly composed of lead with a high percentage of copper alloy. it has a grey-brown patina with traces of dark grey lumps mostly on one side of the piece. It measures 63.4 mm in length, 62.0 mm in width, 19.5 mm in thickness and weighs 321 g. The piece may suggest an activity of re-use of materials on the site of the discovery. It was found in association with a large group of lead and copper alloy material of different ages, from the Roman up to Modern Age, t…

40 pieces of lead of various forms. Given the context they came from they are certainly Roman. They appear a mix with some which may allude to casting. Others appear to be for vessel repair and it is possible all the pieces were used or gathered for this purpose. 5 are off-cuts of sheet lead, all show evidence of neat straight cuts on at least one edge and are 1-1.5mm thick. 1 has the distinct cross section of a vessel repair with expanded faces sandwiching a thinner joining section The larger pot mend is 57.3 by 35.1 by a maximum of 12.9mm thick and has repaired a vessel about …

Small piece of casting waste from the join between two sides of a mould or a casting run off. Both sides are irregular and seem compaosed of runs of metal with a clear ridge down the centre form the mould joint. The piece is not distinctive and could be of any date from the Bronze Age onwards although it is evidence for specialist, high temperature, metal working. t may eb associated with other material found nearby, see SOM-79CE57.

Two pieces of copper-alloy casting waste. They are both slightly concave as though they have fomed on a surface. Though with irregular sides both are broadly of quadrilateral form. Both surfaces of both pieces are rough with cooling lines suggesting they were formed from molton metal. The pieces are not distinctive and could be of any date from the Bronze Age onwards although they are evidence for specialist, high temperature, metal working.

A post-medieval lead-alloy piece of casting waste: a 'header' produced during the making of shot for a small calibre gun. The base is flat, slightly curved, with three circular connected knops - small round protubances, all 4.0mm high, along the centre. The small gaps of c. 3.5mm between the knops indicates the smallness of the shot being made. Overall length: 22.5mm, Height: 8.0mm, Thickness: 7.1mm, Weight: 5.31g Excavations at Beeston Castle have produced similar 'headers' from shot in two sizes, and was probably produced in scissor-like, multiple iron moulds or less likel…

One piece of cast copper alloy, probably casting waste, possibly a blade. The piece was found in conjunction with nine other pieces of casting waste (SOM-FE0013). It has two slightly convex flat faces joining at a thin edge on one side and irregular broken edges on the other three sides. While the piece may be part of a blade with the thin edge being a blade edge it is very rough on both surfaces and does not thin again evenly from the thickest point as might be expected. It is possible it is part of a small pool of molton metal that formed on a slightly dished surface. It is 40.2mm b…

Nine irregular pieces of copper alloy casting waste. Four (104 grams in total) (A1-2, B1, D1 and B2) are rounded with many globules stuck together suggesting the metal was fully molton when they formed. One of these (B2) has a more silvery surface suggesting it may be a high tin or tombac alloy. Three (143 grams in total) (C1, CD2, A3) are flatter as though they have fomed on a surface. One (4 grams) (B3) appears to be a relatively thin, 1.7mm thick, convex piece, fairly consistant in thickness but with irregular material stuck on the concave side and a broken edge all the way around.…

Piece of lead alloy, probably casting waste. the piece is sub oval with one almost straight edge with irregular indents in it, rounded ends and a more convex curved edge. One face is flat and irregular. The other is convex with the thickest point running as a curved ridge from end to end. The part of this side between the ridge and the straighter edge is a slope while between the ridge and the convex edge it is a convex curved in profile. There is a indented line echoing the curve of the ridge and the convex edge. It is 68.8mm long, 32.9mm wide and 8.8mm thick. It weighs 89.37 grams. …

Casting jet, probably in a high tin or zinc copper alloy such as tombac. The jet has a broadly flat but irregular in shape and thickness strip like top formed of the overflow from the mould. From this two roughly rectangular sectioned jets ran side by side down into the mould. They join at the base and have been cut off with a diagonal cut. It is 25.9mm wide, 16.7mm wide and 9.0mm thick in total and weighs 9.19 grams. Material such as this is difficult to date due to its undiagnosic nature but may indicates specialist metal working in the area at some point.

Fourteen pieces of copper alloy casting waste. Irregular shapes with some rough surfaces and other areas with rounded lobes where it has cooled from molton.
