An undiagnostic roman body sherd, probably from an amphorae, dating to the first to third centuries. The sherd is sub-trapezoidal in plan with a flat cross section, of the five breaks two are worn with the rest fresh. The fabric has a pink-orange outer surface with a pale grey core and has been sand tempered. There are also regular (c.5%) inclusions of rounded ironstone up to 2.5mm across and occasional inclusions of possible rounded limestone and angular grey rock or chert up to 2mm across, with the temper visible both in the breaks and in the surfaces of the vessel. Part of the rim and body of a Gauloise 1 flat-based amphorae. The rim fragment is refitted from three sherds and the body from two. The rim has a flared collar with a flat top and angled outerside so it is triangular in section. the inner side of the rim is slightly recessed to create an inner lip for the lid. The fabric is a reasonably hard pale buff with fine inclusions of limestone, quartz and rock and possibly slightly micaceous. The five pieces together weigh 83 grams.

Roman amphora handle fragment. Hard fired mid-orange fabric with c.15% angular quartz temper up to 1mm across. The fragment is the upper part of the handle where it attached to the vessel and is highly curved. White marks go across the breaks and appear to be later deposits. It is 48mm in diameter and weighs 245 grams.
The form suggests it is a Dressel 20 or related type. While the fabric is similar to Dressel 1 the form is very different and it is probably a later Dressel 20 as these tend to have a hard fired orange fabric unlike the earlier buff fabric (Tyers 1996:87-9). Such vess…
