An incomplete lead alloy medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla dating to the period c.AD 1350 - 1530. The object is flask-shaped ie with an oval lower part and wide trapezoid neck above ending in an old, irregular, torn break at the top. It is hollow, with no side loops although small stubs and damage at this point suggest they were present. The object's lower portion is oval and decorated on one face with Spencer's (1990) type II scallop (clam) shell motif made of narrow, very closely spaced lines radiating from the curved bottom edge of the ampulla. The other side has been dented inwards …

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a Medieval or Post-medieval lead-alloy (pewter) spoon now comprising the knop and part of the stem. The style most closely approximates a proto-acorn type but it is unusual in its details. The knop and the remaining stem now form an angle of c60 degrees while the final c4mm of the stem is angled at c30 degrees further, bringing it at right angles to the line of the knop, this orientation is due to later damage and cracking. The remaining stem is c20mm in length and hexagonal in cross-section, the sides of the hexagon at the front and rear being longer to create an app…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval uniface lead alloy token issued by I B at Exeter of Powell type 2, probably dating to AD 1550 to 1800. The token has a slight raised rim around the front and back. The front has the raised letters I B over EXON. The back is plain. It is 24.7mm in diameter, 1.8mm thick and weighs 5.00g. The grey shade and light weight suggests a lead-tin alloy. Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. The decoration on this toke…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete lead-tin alloy post-medieval dress pin dating to c AD 1500 - 1650. The head is solid and sub-spherical, 16.02mm in diameter. Only a small piece of the circular cross sectioned shaft remains, measuring 1.60mm. The base is flanked by two pellets and an embedded white quartz fragment, probably post-depositional. The head is decorated with cast, raised decoration. It is divided into two hemispheres by a line formed of conjoined pellets running from the pin to the top of the head and back. One hemisphere is slightly smaller or squashed, possibly from the mould slipping. Ea…

Medieval lead-alloy pilgrim's ampulla dating to c. AD 1350 to 1530. It is flask-shaped in plan with thinned elongated neck that expand slightly toward the mouth and a rounded lower body. The mouth measures 22.8 mm in width and is now squashed. The neck measures 16.4 mm in length. It is covered by multiple horizontal raised lines running across both sides, but more evidently on the front. A sub-triangular suspension loop projects from either side at the juncture of the body and the neck. On one side the loop is squashed backwards. The lower body is decorated on both sides. On the fr…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval to Post Medieval cast lead-alloy circular unifaced token of unclear Powell type (c. AD 1250-1800). The token has a raised design of confronting D shapes with further lines above and below, a annulet above the retrograde D which also has a cross line through the back line. It is difficult to interpret what the design originally represented. The back is plain. Diameter: 26.8mm, Thickness: 2.6mm, Weight: 8.15g Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval or Post Medieval in date.

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon

A post-medieval lead-alloy one-piece button of c. 16th-century date. It is circular in shape with a convex front and flat reverse. The upper surface is decorated with a moulded ?wheel of ?six spokes springing from a central pellet (the device may be floral but wear and corrosion has rendered it unclear). It seems to sit within a plain line border around the outer edge. On the reverse the integral oval-section shank with loop has been bent to one side. Similar buttons can be seen in Read (2005, 57) where they are dated to c. 16th century.

Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment from a lead-alloy toy 'horn book' of post-medieval date, representing around 25% of the original object. It is from the bottom right hand corner of a rectangular plaque, and reads OP in a line, above TV in a line, above YZ in a line, with decoration below, all in low relief. The omission of the letter U is not unusual (Lewis 2012, 99). The decoration at the base is indistinct but may consist of a central cross flanked immediately by a diagonal line, then by four or five upright strokes: possibly representing a numeral (see Lewis 2012, 100). The letters are within a border c…

Cast lead alloy cap from a Post Medieval powder measure (c. AD 1600-1700). It has straight sides, now squashed inwards with a almost circular base (probably also slightly squashed and distorted) and an open top. Where the sides meet the base there are were two attachment loops, one on each side, now lost to patinated breaks. It measures 16.1mm in height, 18.9 by 16.4mm at the base and 27.5 by 10.0mm at the top. The sides are 1.1mm in thickness and it weighs 11.89g. The powder cap is the most common find from Civil War sites, forming the cap to the powder holder or flask. The caps…
