A sherd of a South-Western (Glastonbury) type ware bowl or jar of middle to late Iron Age date. The reduced fabric contains moderate sub-angular burnt flint (up to 3mm). The rim is everted with two bands of small stamped rectangles below it and a panel of lightly incised diagonal lines beneath this.

Three sherds of hand made pottery of probable late Iron Age or early Roman date. The sample comprises one rim sherd and two body sherds. The rim sherd is chunky with an external bead. It probably formed part of a large globular jar. The fabric is a reduced light grey and contains moderate sub-angular to sub-rounded dark grey inclusions (up to 3mm).

A probable cast copper alloy ox-head bucket handle escutcheon of late Iron Age or Roman date. The escutcheon is in the form of the upper part of the head of an ox and measures 27.8mm front to back 26.9mm side to side and 23.6mm top to bottom. It weighs 21.3g. It has two slightly curving horns, a forwards-pointing snout, the end of which is broken, and almond-shaped eyes. Six thick-walled pottery sherds of probable late Iron Age date. Five of the six body sherds have reduced light to mid grey cores with oxidised ornage/buff layers adjacent to the more reduced buff/grey surfaces. The other sherd is more comprehensively reduced. The fabric is coarse with moderate red and black iron oxide (<1mm), rare grog (up to 2mm) and rare white inclusions, possibly limestone (up to 2mm). These sherds are likely to have formed part of large thick-walled storage jars and the curvature on one sherds suggests a rolled rim.

A cast copper alloy Birdlip brooch of late Iron Age date. The brooch measures 54.2mm in length and weighs 12.4g. The integral sprung pin has broken off the oval upper bow. Part way down the bow there is a moulded transverse projecting disc and below this a further moulded projection which curves upwards and narrows to bluntly pointed terminal. Below this the bow narrows gradually into a plain rounded foot. On the back of the lower part of the bow is the incomplete flat catchplate, which has two cut-out sections. A cast copper alloy Langton Down brooch of early Roman date. The brooch measures 40mm in length and weighs 5.5g. The measurement across the incomplete cylindrical wings is 16.6mm. They conceal the remains of the spring for the missing pin. The bow has a thin rectangular cross section which is consistent throughout its length. On the front is engraved decoration comprising a vertical dotted double linear border beside each edge with a wavy line and spirals within. On the back are the remains of the perforated catchplate. A worn cast copper alloy Colchester one-piece brooch of late Iron Age or early Roman date. The incomplete brooch measures 45.4mm by 11.1mm by 3.1mm and weighs 4.7g. The surviving part comprises the short plain crossbar, less than half of the spring, the rearward hook which would have kept the chord in place and the plain curving bow. The pin, the rest of the spring and all but a stub of the catchplate are missing. A similar but more complete example can be seen in Hattatt's 'Visual Catalogue' (2000, p. 296, fig. 155, no. 250). This brooch is from Thetford, Norfolk.

A cast copper alloy toggle of late Iron Age or early Roman date. The toggle measures 30.4mm by 16.6mm by 10.5mm and weighs 14.9g. It is cylindrical with a loop on one side, which would have been used to attach the toggle to clothing or horse harness. The loop has a broader curving central section which narrows slightly on each side before flaring out again at the point where it meets the main body of the toggle. The pin, the spring and the catchplate are missing. The surviving part of the rearward hook is riveted to the upper bow. The back of the brooch is hollow. No decoration can be discerned.

Description: A short section of gold bar
Discussion: Non-destructive analysis of the metal content of the bar shows that the core and surface have different concentrations of gold. The core is 50-54% gold whereas the surface is nearer 80%. It is impossible to be certain without destructive analysis of the bar, but the surface of the bar may have been treated by depletion gilding to improve the gold content.
