Object type: QUERN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a rotary quern of uncertain date. Made of well cemented and sorted medium to fine grain sandstone. The fragment is part of one side of the quern and does not extend to the middle hole so the dimensions of the entire stone are unclear. The quern stone is flat with a convex rounded edge and one face wider than the other. The wider face meets the side at a sharp angle and is pecked and roughened and presumably the grinding surface. The other face is smooth like the rounded edge. It is 75.6mm long, and a maximum of 67.8mm wide and 36.5mm thick; it weighs 317 grams. The…

One end of a whetstone made of well cemented and sorted medium grain sandstone. The whetstone is sub-square to D-shaped in section with rounded corners, particularly two adjacent corners, and a bar shape with irregular broken ends. The more rounded corners are probably from use. It is 38.7mm long, and a maximum of 26.7mm by 24.1mm; it weighs 37.0 grams. It is not a local rock but maybe Devonian (D. Parsons pers comm) and traded fairly locally. Whetstones are known to have been used from the Bronze Age onwards and continued to be used for scythes and other tools into the 20t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy open mouthed bell, of probable Roman to Medieval date. The bell has a two-tiered triangular profile, divided by a right angled step around half way up the height of the object, and a circular plan. At its apex is a circular perforation to hold a clapper, now missing, in addition to two worn projections, probably the vestigal remains of an integral attachment loop. Height: 29.9mm, Thickness: 3.0mm, Diameter: 45.0mm (max); 10.8mm (min), Weight: 29.9g. A large number of broadly similar connical copper alloy Roman bells have been recorded onto the PAS

A spherical lead bead or weight with a narrow hole through it. The piece is slightly sub-spherical with flattened top and bottom. There is old damage to one side, possibly from the plough and indented lines and dots which may be deliberate decoration or damage. A hole 1.8mm in diameter goes through from top to bottom. The piece is 19.6mm in diameter and 16.8mm high. It weighs 34.31g. The decoration on this piece is possibly accidental but the hole is clearly deliberate. It would allow the weight or bead to be strung on a thin cord. The size may suggest it is modified musket sho…

An irregular, undatable piece of lead waste. No form is visible, and the object appears to be product of a large number of congealed lead drips. Length: 43.0mm, Width: 32.7mm, Thickness: 28.7mm, Weight: 96.33g. This object was recorded due to its proximity to St. Nicholas' Priory (also known as Barlynch Priory, HER: MSO8840), founded by William De Say during the reign of Henry II (AD 1154-1189).

Broad period: UNKNOWN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy ring with hexagonal cross section and slightly uneven thickness and width of unknown date. The object is undecorated but has long striations around its outer face, probably from filing or wear, and with two areas of wear where the ring is thinner. Diameter: 27.4mm, width: 4.0mm, Thickness of loop from: 4.6mm, to: 3.3mm, Weight: 7.13g. Such rings are largely undatable and can be as early as Iron Age, but it is most likely a Medieval to Post-Medieval horse harness ring, possibly to link two straps given how it is worn in two places.

Two irregularly shaped pieces of copper alloy casting waste of uncertain date. The first (34.39g) is broadly sub rectangular but with a small extension which may represent a point where molten copper had escaped, the other (27.13g) is flatter but is significantly more irregularly shaped on one face, with several pits and channels probably created by corrosion, trapped within some of these are traces of charcoal. Although undatable, these represent a larger sample also found in the field and may suggest a specialist metal working site.

Fragment of an amorphous lump of copper alloy. The piece has an irregular form with perhaps one curved side which may be the original edge. One face is very irregular with deep pits. The other, convex face is more even and may be part of the original surface with ca slight ridge follwoing the line of the possible original edge where the convex side meets the flatter 'top'. The piece is 115mm long, 74mm wide, 39.3mm thick and weighs 710 grams. One fragment of burnt clay which is probably a piece of daub. Orangey-pink external layer with buff areas. Sand inclusions, c.5% of total and occasional soft orange inclusions, fired daub or plaster. Irregular shape with a shallow C shaped groove, probably an impression from the wattle to which this would have been stuck. 13.97 grams. Such material is hard to date out of context and could be Iron Age - Post Medieval but given other material found near by it is probably Roman.

A lead pot mend of possible Roman to post medieval date (c. AD43-1600). It consists of a broadly rectangular piece of lead with a narrower longitudinal plug projecting from one face which would have filled the hole in the original vessel. The lead has a thick white patina. Lead pot mends were used throughout the Roman and medieval periods as a result these are extremely difficult to date unless dateable ceramic material survives with the repair. The pot mend measures 44.02mm in length, 15.69mm maximum width, 6.57mm minimum width, is 10.28mm thick and weighs 39.22g.
