A complete cast, lead probable weight of unknown date.  The object is circular in plan, the upper surface is slightly convex, the reverse side is flat and it is D-shaped in cross section. There is pitting and scratches on the upper surface.  The object has a mid-grey patina. The diameter of the weight is 73.26mm, it is 16.01mm thick and it weighs 456 grams (1lb). Lead weights are difficult to date and the weight could date because they are found in contexts from the Roman to Post-Medieval period.

A complete cast lead weight probably dating to c.AD 1100-1700. The weight is conical in shape with a rectangular tab at the top. The tab is almost half the length of the entire weight and has a hole pierced through it. From the tab, the weight curves downwards and widens towards the bottom ending in a circular base with a flaring rim. On profile, the weight assumes a bell shape. The base is flat with a circular depression at its centre. The weight has a cream/light brown patina. It measures 45.6mm in length, 22.1mm in diameter at the base, 8.9mm in thickness at the tap and w…

A cast lead circular probably weight of unknown date. The object is conical in shape, circular in plan and with a trapezoidal cross section. It has a flat plain bottom and gently sloping sides, one on which is longer than the other creating an oblique top surface. The top surface has a has cast raised border with a sub-central circular protrusion. The object measures 14.6mm to 12.5mm in height, 29.4 mm in diameter and weighs 83.12g. Simple lead weights in various shapes were in use from the Roman period through to the Post Medieval period, though a number recorded on the PAS

A cast lead sub-spherical object with a flattened 'base' and cylindrical stem projecting from the top. There are clear castng lines running down opposite sides of the sphere and multiple slight facets on the stem and transverse lines running around the stem, possibly from being tidied with a knife. The piece is 27.3mm in diameter 31.7mm tall, 22.8mm excluding the 'stem' and weighs 115.91g, almost exactly 4 ounces. The form of th piece is hard to parallel and appears similar to shot, althoguh too small for cannon and too large for musket. It could be used as part of grape sho…

A lead weight of unknown, probably modern, date. The weight is circular with an indistinct pattern on either side which consists of numerous lines radiating out from the centre where there are multiple peck marks . The piece measures 35.86mm in diameter, 3.95mm in thickness and weighs 34.51g, 1.214 ounces. As it is not close to a round weight in the avoisdupois system it is likely it was used for weighing down fabric etc and the decoration was casually done.

Cast lead weight in the shape of a truncated square based pyramid. The sides are upright in the lower part then change direction with a distinct carination to slope inwards to the flat top. There is no cast design on the top; various indents appear to be damage rather than a specific design. The reverse is plain. It measures 41.92mm by 42.61mm at the base, is 13.16mm tall and weighs 203.51 grams, just over 7 ounces. Roman and Medieval sub-pyramidal weights are catalogued in Biggs and Withers (2000:27-29) but all the examples have raised cast designs. Plain lead weights were cast lo…

A lead suspension weight probably dating to the Medieval to Post Medieval period. The weight is sub-rectangular in shape. The top narrows to an integral suspension loop and the base is flat and protrudes slightly from the sides all around. The object is quite crude and all surfaces are pitted. The weight measures 47.89mm in length, 14.52mm in width and weighs 69.21g. Lead weights were used for a long period and lack many diagnostic features, so are difficult to date precisely although most are Medieval or Post medieval in date. A similar example can be found at SOM-BC7E70.

A lead alloy weight of uncertain date. The weight is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile, with rounded edges. Both faces are generally flat although the top face is very slightly convex and there is a very slight linear depression across the diameter, in which is set the remains of an iron loop. The bottom face is flatter but there is a slightly raised ridge around the circumference. On one edge there are four linear parallel grooves. However, their position suggests that these are more likely to represent accidental damage rather than any deliberate markings. Similarly…

Lead piriform (drop shaped) weight of uncertain, Roman- Post Medieval date. The weight is circular in cross section with a conical upper part and hemispherical base with a slightly flattened lower surface allowing it to sit upright. At the top point it extends up into a globular perminal which appears bent over to one side and possibly truncated at the top. The weight could be suspended from the groove between the main weight and this globular terminal . The upper, conical, part of the main weigt is decorated with eight incised grooves running around it, the upper four in a spiral the…

Lead spindle whorl or weight. The object is plano-convex and sub-circular with a flat base, domed top and an irregular oval outline. There is a circular hole through the centre, top to botton 8.1mm in diameter. The entire piece is 25.2mm by 22.4mm and 10.9mm thick and weighs 20.64g. While lead spindle whorls are known from the late Early Medieval onwards, and the central hole is sufficiently large for this use, the irregular outline of this example, which would make the turn uneven, suggest it is more likely to be a weight. Lead weights were often homemade for weighing down a varie…

A cast lead weight or possibly spindle whorl. It is circular and has a slightly domed top and bottom and convex sides giving it an oval cross section. There is a oval hole runing through the centre and seven evenly spaced grooves running down the sides. It is 17.8mm in diameter, 8.8mm thick and weights 9.35g, the hole is 6.3 by 5.5mm across. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval.

Cast lead alloy weight, probably of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The weight is a truncated cone with a sub-circular flat base from which the sides taper inwards to the flattened round topped terminal. The sides are slightly angular with four convex sides meeting in rounded corners. The terminal has a circular piercing through it for suspension. There is an irregularly shaped off centre indentation on the base, either a casting flaw or damage. The weight measures 30.9mm high, 24.4mm in diameter at the base and weighs 70.50 grams. Lead weights were used for a long period and lack…

A lead item formed of two truncated biconical elements attached together, both flat at the top. A median ridge on the exterior is visible, filed down in places. A large circular hole at a slight angle travels through the centre of the object measuring up to 14.9mm in diameter. The surface colour of this object is greyer than white suggesting a relatively recent date, although an earlier date cannot be ruled out entirely.

Crude broadly conical lead weight of unknown date. It has a central hole with a recessed ring around the hole on lower surface and comes to a rounded point at the top. It measures 17.9mm long, 20.0mm diameter at the base and weighs 28.42g. The hole is 6.3mm in diameter at the top, 5.4mm at the bottom. Plain lead weights were usually made locally for a wide range of individual uses. They are therefore hard to date precisely, although most are Medieval or Post Medieval.
