A cast lead or lead-alloy spindle whorl or possibly weight. It is plano-convex with a flat base, vertical sides and slightly convex top with a circular hole running through from top to bottom near the centre. The hole is slightly off set from the centre but that might be due to damage down that edge which is also thinner. It is 29.7mm in diameter at the base, 12.4mm thick and weighs 49.76g; the hole is 7.8mm in diameter. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and such plain and rough examples are hard to date precisely althou…

A lead spindle whorl. The object is a torus shape being circular in plan with a circular hole in its centre and sub-oval in cross section, almost being pointed on its outside edge and almost straight sided on its inside edge. The spindle whorl is a light grey colour mostly with a worn smooth surface although it has a large chip, possibly from plough damage on its reverse. The entire piece is 39.3mm by 39.5mm and measures 8.8mm thick. It weighs 69.91 grams. The circular hole through the centre, has a diameter of c.12.1mm. Simple spindle whorls were in use over a very long peri…

A cast lead or lead-alloy spindle whorl or possibly weight. It is broadly conical with a flattened top and base with a tapering circular hole running through the centre. It is 29.3mm in diameter at the base, c18mm at the top, it is 11.1mm high and weighs 36.76g; the hole is 10.2mm in diameter at the base, 6.8mm at the top. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and such plain and rough examples are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - post-medieval.

A cast lead spindle whorl of an unknown date. The whorl is circular in shape and the top and bottom surfaces are flattened. The outer side is convex and the inner face is mostly flat. Through the centre is a circular hole measuring 7.0mm in diameter. There are a few raised straight lines cast on the top and outer side of the whorl, these suggest a zigzag pattern but there are too few and too ill-defined, particularly with the later damage, for this to be definite. The whorl has several breakages on its surface. The way in which the breaks have occurred suggests that there would ha…

A cast lead spindle whorl of an unknown date. The whorl is circular in shape and the top and bottom surfaces are flattened. Through the centre is a circle hole measuring 8.7mm in diameter. There is no visible decoration on the surface. The whorl has several breakages on one side. The way in which the breaks have occurred suggests that there would have been a high content of tin mixed into the lead before the whorl was cast. The whorl was found on a site that has produced Roman and post-medieval finds. There is a possibility of it being dated as Roman, however, more modern finds hav…

A stone spindle whorl of unknown date. The spindle whorl is 32.1mm in diameter, circular in plan. In profile it is bi-conical with a flattened top and bottom and distinct ridge around the centre. 18.6mm high. Both faces of the spindle whorl are flat and undecorated. A straight sided, circular perforation 5.9mm in diameter runs through, slightly off centre, for attachment to a wooden spindle. It weighs 22.77 grams. The stone is dark grey in colour with a distinct laminar structure, the softer layers of which have preferrentialy weathered. It has been identified by Dennis Parsons as …

A cast lead weight or possibly spindle whorl. It is circular and has a domed top and flat base giving it an almost hemi-spherical shape. There is a circularl hole running through the centre expanding towards the base. The sides are plain with no clear decoration, although worn and slightly irregular. There is modern damage to the base. The piece is 29.1mm in diameter, 14.2mm thick and weights 47.64g, the hole is 6.7mm in diameter at the top, 12.2mm at the base. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date pr…

An incomplete, cast lead alloy spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is flattened biconical with a broad central ridge around the centre. The hole through the object is large (11.6mm diameter) and off-centre. The spindle whorl has a small break on one edge due to the metal corroding and laminating. The diameter of the spindle whorl is 26.6, and it is 14.3mm thick and weighs 31.02g. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval.
