An opaque light blue glass fragment of unknown date, Roman to Modern 50 AD - 1900 AD.  The object is irregular in plan and section and measures 15.39mm in length, 5.27mm in width with a thickness of 2.27mm. It weighs 0.18 grams. The surface is abraded and there is no clear evidence of the central perforation if the object were a bead. As stated by LVPL-33B418, glass beads are problematic to date. Whilst often considered to be Roman (see, for example, LON-00CE9C, and SWYOR-F91EF7) or early medieval, beads of this form have been in use from the Iron Age th…

A fragment of clear, uncoloured glass dating from either the Roman period or Post-medieval. The fragment is very roughly triangular in shape measuring 41.5mm by 39.4mm by 29.7mm. It is of uneven thickness to a maximum of 2.3mm. The piece is curved, the degree of curvature (i.e. distance from the central part of the convex area to a line joining the furthest extremities) being c7mm. Very small air bubbles can be seen within the glass as well as specks of other material that are mostly very small though one irregular piece measures c6 x 3mm. There are faint striations created during its…

Translucent pale blue-green (aqua) glass bead of uncertain date. The bead appears to be oval in plan and oval in section giving a globular shape with slightly flattened top and bottom. There is a circular hole through the centre with a slight chip to one side. Spiralling indented lines are visible on the end and sides where the glass was wound around a pontil to make the bead. The glass indents into the the holes at the end visible from the photo. The hole is 3mm in diameter. The bead is 10mm long and 12mm in diameter. The spiral lines suggest the bead was hand made by winding bu…

Translucent pale blue (aqua) glass bead of uncertain date. The bead appears to be sub-oval in plan with one rounded end. The other end is mostly missing to a break across the bead but appears to similarly flattened. The sides are irregular as it has been formed of a trail of glass and not rolled to smooth the edges of the trails. This has left spiralling indents in the sides. The glass flares out slightly around the holes at each end. It has a rough sided hole 2.3mm in diameter running though it. It is 10.8mm long and 8.5mm in diameter and weighs 0.9 grams. Irregularity in the sh…

Dark blue glass bead of uncertain date. The bead is sub-oval in plan with one rounded end and one more conical end, and circular in section. It has a rough sided hole 2.5mm in diameter running though it. It is 11.9mm long and 9.6mm in diameter and weighs 1.68 grams. Irregularity in the shape and the number of air bubbles suggest it was made by being wound on a pontil. Although cobalt blue beads were popular in the later Iron Age and Roman period, those examples are usually more globular, wider in diameter than they are long. Guido (1978:70) comments that stray examples of such beads…
