A lead pig with probable engraved gaming board of possible Roman date, c. 43 - 400 AD. The object has been engraved on one side with what appears to be a possible gaming board, with irregular squares roughly 1cm square. Grid gaming boards in the Roman period varied in quality, with some examples carefully executed while others were irregular. Grid boards are traditionally associated with the game known as ludus latrunculorum (Schädler 1994). The most common configurations appear to have been 7x8, 8x8 and 9x10 grids, although the example seen here appears a lar…

Lead pot mend of 'rivet' form, probably Roman in date. The mend is formed of a strip of lead, D-shaped in cross section, highly convex on the front and flat on the back with two integral pegs. A line running around the side suggests it was built up from two lengths, placed one on top of the other and partially fused, one piece being longer than the other. The pegs are circular in cross section and have a harrower base ending in a bulbous end. The mend is now bent inwards slightly and is 53.3mm long, 10.5mm wide and 9.3mm thick, excluding the pegs, 15.9mm including them and weighs 32.4…

Roman bi-conical cast lead steelyard weight with rusted iron at the top and bottom ends indicating the original existence of suspension loops. One end is flattened at a slight angle, possibly indicating the loss of a small amount of lead. At the other end a pyramidal piece of iron protrudes c3mm from the lead. It is possible that an iron rod runs through the weight from end to end but this cannot be verified. The central ridge where the two conical ends meet is slightly rounded. There are no signs of decoration though there are several diagonal incisions on one of the cones; these are …

A Roman lead ingot, or "pig" probably dating to the period c. AD 150-402. The ingot is rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in cross-section with rounded corners and no inscription visible on the top. The top has a raised rim around a recessed rectangular panel. The rim is also trapezoid in shape with bevelled inner and outer faces. The rim varys between 20.4 and 21mm wide on one long side 23.4 and 23.3 on other. The panel is recessed 1.8mm and 2.5mm at the ends deepening to 6.1mm in the centre. The top of the panel is ridged, the form of the ridges suggesting semi-molton lead was smoo…

Two lead pot mends of possible Roman date (c. AD 43 - 410) although a later date cannot be ruled out. The pot mends consists of two irregularly shaped flat pieces of lead joined by a central plug between them which would have filled the hole in the original vessel. One has quite a large flat piece relative to the size of the plug, the other has only slightly expanded outer and inner plates. The first has ridges on one plate, possibly caused by cloth or another substance pushed against the inner side of the pot to cast against. The second has concentric cooling lines. There are s…

Seven pieces of lead casting waste, six amorphous 'blobs' of melted lead cooled as the fell and one Roman vessel repair formed of a long strip at the top from which descend two integral anchoring projections (rivets), circular in cross section to go into holes drilled either side of a crack. The top strip has been shaped on the upper face with angled sides and a flat top, the lower face which sat against the vessel is more irregular and the strip becomes thicker, and less well formed, towards one end. The repair rivet is 46.7mm long, 14.6mm wide, 7.2mm thick and weighs 13.36g, the pro…

A Lead weight of probable Roman date, c. AD 43-410. The weight is sub-circular in plan and a squat, piriform shape in profile, and with a slightly concave base. From the apex the vestigial remains of an iron attachment loop are present, which can be seen to pass through the weight and is visible in the base. Dimensons: Height 23.6mm; diameter 30.3mm; weight 92.35g.
