An incomplete polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000 BC to 2351 BC. Only the cutting edge of the axehead survives and is D-shaped in plan and ovate in section. The cutting edge is noticably sharp. The axehead is made of a light and dark brown mottled flint, and there is a hinge fracture to the front of the axehead. There is also a separate flake taken off the reverse side of the axehead, it is inclear if this is a use break or deliberate break. The polished surface has been visibly worn by natural causes likely during later movement of …

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A tear drop shaped multi purpose scraper tool probably dating to the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age (2700 - 1601 BC). The tool is made from a secondary struck flake of mottled dark grey flint. On the ventral side there is a small bulb of percussion at the proximal end of the flake and soft ripples extending towards the distal end, suggesting it was probably struck using a soft hammer. The ventral side also contains weathering scars suggesting the flake has likely been moved from its original depositional environment following natural processes. The dorsal side of the fl…

Six flint waste flakes of Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 7000 - 1600 BC), all showing a high gloss patina. The majority (Nos 1-3 & 5) are likely Neolithic to Early Bronze Age in date, however, Nos 4 and 6 indicate bladelet production and could date to the Mesolithic period. Flake 1: made on a secondary flake with white cortex remaining on part of the dorsal surface, the flint is dark grey with white-light grey inclusions. The proximal end of the flake is thin and the striking platform seems to have broken off. The distal end is…

Four waste flakes made from tertiary material, with no cortex remaining. They are likely made of grey flint, but have all been recorticated displaying a white patina of varying degrees. Three of the four flakes are elongate and therefore indicate blade production, likely of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (c. 7000 - 3500 BC). Flake 1: This is the smallest of the four flakes, and irregular in shape. It has a low-medium gloss white patina, but some grey is visible. The striking platform is narrow and the ventral face shows a low bulb of percussion. The dorsal face …
