The shorter arm of the V forms a continuous curve, possibly the inside edge of the buckle loop whicvh is slightly thickened at the edge on the inner side. A complete late Early Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) copper-alloy zoomorphic stirrup terminal of Williams Type 2b dating to the. mid to late 11th century. One of a pair which would have decorated the lower corners of a stirrup. The stirrup terminal is sub-rectangular enface and sub-triangular in profile with a flat base, angled front which tapers in width towards the top and concave back giving a C-shaped cross section for most of the length apart from the solid base which appears complete with no projecting lip. The lower part is shaped into an animal head with prominent spiral nos…

Copper alloy rectangular bar shaped ingot of uncertain, probably Early Medieval date. The bar is roughly square in section, tapering slightly in width and thickness from one end to the other. The ends appear either complete or possibly cut neatly in antiquity. Two of the long faces have a series of transverse hammer dents creating irregularly spaced ridges and grooves. Similar ridging is seen on the wider end of another face while the forth face is mostly corroded, obscuring most details but may have had similar hammer marks. The piece is 60.7mm long, 11.4mm by 11.1mm at the wider …

An incomplete Early Medieval to early Medieval copper alloy stirrup-strap mount, probably dating to c. AD 1000-1100. Although unusually squat, this example appears to be of Williams' Class A, type 1A. The mount consists of a sub-triangular/piriform plate from the top of which expands a rectangular projection terminating in a transverse collar. This projection is perforated with a central small rivet hole drilled from the reverse and not orginal, likely replacing a lost apex loop. The plate is perforated twice further at the base, above a stepped trapezoid flange which projects from th…

Description:  Gold ring, made of two twisted gold rods of round section. The two ends are knotted round each other. The ring has been bent into an oval shape. Probably Viking, 9th-11th century. Dimensions: 29 x 17.5mm and 2.5 mm in section. Weight 3.98g Discussion: The form of the ring is consistent with Viking manufacture, although a ring of only two twisted rods would be unusual. Modern imitations of Viking jewellery are not uncommon and are often inspired by Viking designs rather than direct copies, so the possibility that this fits into that category cannot be excl…
