Late Early Medieval tin-copper alloy pseudo-nummular brooch of Weetch type 2.Ai. The brooch is circular with a raised, cast, design on the front of a left facing radiate crowned bust with multiple lines of drapery below and to the lower right and a pseudo legend to the left all within a double line beaded border. The nonsense legend appears to read cHc or possibly oIID. An upside down V to the right of the head probably represents to tie from a diadem.
The back is lain with the stubs of a broken pin lug and catchplate. These are arranged on opposites sides and run vertically down t…

A worn and incomplete late early-medieval (11th century) copper alloy gilded cloisonné enamelled disc brooch of Weetch's type 20A with projecting lobes. It is missing the separately attached catchplate and lug on the reverse and part of its enamel.
The brooch is broadly circular in shape. It would have originally had 12 projecting knops extending from its edge. However, these are all now extremely worn, with 3 being almost completely missing. Only one is somewhat well preserved, it representing half of the original feature. This demonstrated that each knop would have been rounded …

An incomplete Early Medieval gilded copper-alloy saucer brooch. The brooch consists of a decorated face, a hinge, and part of the catchplate, however, the pin is missing.
The brooch was once circular but has suffered damage on its outside edge such that much of the outer third of the brooch is now missing baring two opposite regions. As such the surviving brooch is now sub-oval in plan and sub-rectangular in subsection. On the reverse of the brooch is the pin hinge which consists of a D shaped projection. There is a hole faintly visible, however this is now filled with copper all…

An incomplete and decorated early medieval copper alloy Great Square-headed brooch, dating to c. AD 500-570. The brooch consists of the head, the bow, the catchplate, the spring and part of the pin. There are signs of guilding.
The head plate is rectangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The head of the brooch remains complete to the width of 19.9mm and length of c.14.6mm.
The bow protrudes from the head and curves forwards and outwards from the front of the plate making it C shaped in profile. The bow is c.18mm in length, 10.4mm in width and is oval in cross-…

A near complete early medieval copper alloy saucer brooch with moulded Style I decoration on its upper surface dating to between AD 450 and 550.
The brooch is slightly oval in plan and flat in cross section. Its front plate with integral catchplate and pin attachment lug survive although the latter two are chipped and the pin is now lost.
The attachment lug projects c.3.7mm from the reverse of the plate and is incomplete, its outer edge having been chipped away, although a portion of the piercing for holding the pin survives (diameter c.1.5mm). One side of the attachment lug and…

A cast copper-alloy brooch, either a small shallow saucer brooch or a Suzuki Class B or C button brooch of early early-medieval date (5th - 6th century AD) with style I decoration. The brooch is circular and 18.15mm in diameter and weighs 2.23 grams. The rim is upturned and offset 1mm within this is a further concentric circle of raised copper that surrounds the central design. The raised rim and raised central design are both c.2mm thick. The design is not a facing mask, the most common design on button brooches and is difficult to read clearly, it appears combine elements of the pro…

Fragment of a gilded copper alloy Early Medieval, probably eighth century, item, probably a disc brooch. The fragment is part of a plate and broadly triangular in shape with the shorter edge slightly convex. The object bends back slightly towards this edge but this might be damage. All the edges are damaged with patinated breaks, it is possible the curved edge is only slightly abraded as the design appears to respect it while the other breaks run across the design.
The front is decorated with a raised design probably chip carved, although the indents are filled with mud, making the…

A silver penny of Edward the Confessor which has been modified by gilding and piercing, probably to form a brooch. The gilding covers the reverse and edges of the obverse. Three circular holes have been drilled through, burrs around the edges suggest this was mainly from the obverse. The holes are situated near the edge at 1 o'clock, 5 o'clock and 8 o'clock (seen from the reverse). A crack runs between the one at 1 o'clock and the edge.
The coin is a Bust facing / small cross type dating to early to mid-1060s minted by Si…

An incomplete Early Medieval copper alloy brooch dating to the period AD 450-550. The brooch is sub-circular in plan. It has an undecorated border around a raised moulded central circle within which is a recessed cross patteé. There is a chip in the border as the result of old damage. The reverse is undecorated and exhibits the remains of a single broken pin lug and catchplate at opposite edges. The pin is missing. There is a dark green patina on the surface.
The brooch measures 21.31mm in diameter, 1.85mm in thickness and weighs 2.95g.

Description: Incomplete early medieval silver disc with an incised design. Approximately 15% of the brooch is lost to a patinated break down one side. The rim is bent forward slightly, more pronounced in some places than others. Despite the broken edge, it is possible to see that the disc was not perfectly circular when complete.
The front of the disc is incised with an equal-armed, saltire cross within a circle. The circle joins the terminals of the cross-arms with no division and provides the outer border of the design. I…

A copper-alloy button brooch of early-medieval date (5th - 6th century AD), of Class C. This example is incomplete in so far as its iron pin been lost to corrosion; a trace of corrosion product is present adjacent to one of the lugs (now so abraded that one cannot distinguish the pin lug from catch-plate). The rim is upturned (H.: 3.2mm) and very slightly flared. The upper surface is decorated with a central moulded anthropomorphic face-mask viewed straight on within a line border. The helmet is formed a pair of nested peltaic outlines. The eyebrows and nose are formed of a single T-s…

Fragment of a cast copper brooch of Early Medieval date. The fragment consists of part of the headplate or one branch. It is flat on the back and slightly convex on the front, thicker towards the centre and thinning towards the edges. All the edges are broken with very worn, patinated breaks but the upper right and right edges appear almost complete while those on the left and bottom are broken where the plate is thicker (the labelling of the edges is based on the orientation shown in the photograph, this may, or may not be correct). On the front is a very worn design, probably broadl…

Fragment of an Early Medieval lead alloy item, possibly an annular brooch. The piece is about one fifth of a circle with irregular breaks at either end. It ios wide with only a small circle left in the middle. The inner and outer edges appear complete with a slight lip at the edges on the back, which is otherwise flat. The front is decorated with a raised interlaced design. To one side is a triple stranded long curve ending at one end in the break and at the other in a double transverse line with two opposing spirals rising from it. The inner spiral is a double curve ending in a point…

The terminal and a short length of the arm of a cast copper alloy penannular brooch of early-medieval date. Less than half of the brooch survives and the pin is missing. The surviving fragment measures 17.1mm in length and weighs 4.6g. The polyhedral terminal measures 10.3mm by 9.1mm by 6.7mm. It has thirteen sides: five lozenges interpersed with smaller triangles. There is no trace of any decoration. The arm's cross-section is oval. The polyhedral terminal fits into Fowler's Type G; however, this example does not have a ribbed hoop. The dating of this type of brooch is problematic, b…
