Incomplete post-Medieval gold posy ring with significant damage, now in the form of a strip rather than hoop of metal. The band is of shallow d-shaped profile. The ring appears to have been cut at the point of commencement of the inscription, which is subsequently intact. This reads – in Italic script – Let loue. Last (where the L of let takes an extended form and last is written with a long or medial s). There is no mark, and no other obviously diagnostic evidence. Discussion: The text ‘Let love last’ has not yet been found, but several examples of the sentiment

A silver signet finger-ring. The hoop expands to form a heart-shaped bezel. The face of the bezel is lightly etched with the initials "WRC" in faux-Gothic characters running from the upper-left to the lower right; the letters are made from minute hatches. Small flourishes of hatching lend a decorative, floral effect. Opposite the bezel, the hoop is flattened, perhaps intentionally. Dimensions: Length: 20.62mm Thickness: 2.05mm Width of bezel: 15.48mm Weight: 8.52g

Bone 'test/trial piece' in the form of a fish. Broadly ovoid in form, with tail-end missing. The object is worked on both sides, and has worked dorsal and lower fin, incised ring-and-dot eye, curved gill line and small curved mouth. It is possible the object was once a handle, for a knife or such-like, but is more likely to be a trial piece.

The Hackney Hoard The 80 coins are all gold 20-dollar pieces (so-called 'double eagles') of the United States, issued between 1854 and 1913. The coins are thus all the same denomination, introduced in this form in 1850, and were struck to the same standard, 90% gold, used from 1837 until the end of US gold coinage in 1933. The catalogue shows that the coins gradually increase in number across the decades from 1870 to 1909 (13 coins from 1870-9; 14 from 1880-89; 18 from 1890-99; and 25 from 1900-9). Over a quarter of the total were issued in the last 6 six years represented. Toget…

A large gold finger ring inscribed on the inside and engraved with foliate decoration alternating with geometric design to the exterior. The inscription (with very slight traces of black enamel) to the inside may read 'Suis de partyer', thus translating to 'I am to leave', in which case this could be a momento mori. The floral designs to the outside face are keyed, in preparation for enamelling. This ring appears to be 18th or 19th century and is therefore not classed as Treasure.

Gold ornamental ring from Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds This gold ring, found apparently in 1887, is formed of a central cross within a lobed frame. The back of the bezel is flat. In the absence of any comparable pieces in the British Museum collections it has not proved possible to identify the age and origins of this ring. In these circumstances, there is not enough evidence to show that it is more than 300 years old. As this find was discovered pre-1997 we must evaluate it under Treasure Trove laws rather than the Treasure Act 1996. Under Treasure Trove, evidence would have to point to th…

Treasure case 2006 T328 Fragment of Cast Object Part of a cast object that superficially looks like a twisted Iron Age torc. The object is cast in one piece from gun metal or a similar grey alloy. It is probably a fragment of furniture handle, perhaps 100-200 years old. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object does not contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Treasure case 2005 T303 Two joining fragments of corrugated gold sheet, seemingly originally of tubular form, now crushed. The form, style and overall appearance of the fragments do not correspond to any known ancient type, and scientific analysis of the body metal and soldered seam confirm the curatorial view that the sheet is part of an object of recent date, probably manufactured within the last hundred years or so. Date: 19th or 20th century. Dimensions: Total length of two joining frags. 61 mm. Weight: Total, 5.69 g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of…

A silver hoop resembling the frame of a brooch. A break at the outer edge implies a fitting of some sort (stitching loop?) was attached to it. It has a flat back. The front is decorated with a series of twists alternated with bands of small, spherical pellets. The find is of no great age and is likely to be less than a hundred years old.

Two interlocking silver coloured bangles, hollow and with beads looseinside. Both are different in design: one hatched and one dotted. Discussion: The bangles are not thought contain more than 10 % silver, the main component being copper alloy, and they are thought to be 19th century in date. As such, these items do not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

19th century gold spherical bead pendant This pendant is formed of a hollow spherical bead with a triple thread of twisted wire round the centre and lozenges of granulation applied in two rows above and below the twisted wire. The pendant loop is formed of a tube for a chain to pass through, the openings edged with applied wire. The regular placing of the grain work decoration and the form of the pendant loop suggests a date in the 19th century. There is no evidence to date this object pre 1705.

18th-20th century curved decorative fragment possibly from a brooch.A curved, decorative fragment, confirmed as not Roman by a Romano-British specialist; its exact function unclear, but possibly part of a brooch. Though Renaissance in ornament-style, it appears to be a modern cast, and thus dateable post-1706. As such, this object does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
