An incomplete copper alloy strap end dating from the Early Medieval period, in the 9th century AD.
Although in one piece, the strap end has two distinct parts: the strap attachment plate, and a long tapering shaft. The split-end strap attachment plate is trapezoidal in plan (being 15mm long and its width tapering from 10mm at the split end to 7mm where it joins to the shaft), and wedge-shaped in profile. Near its widest point are two rivet holes, with rivets still in place. There remains some organic material within the split, but it has mostly disintegrated, allowing the sh…

Medieval (13th to 15th century) possible strap end fragment.
The copper alloy fragment is sub-rectangular with moulded sides and a moulded decorative upper surface. The moulded decoration is difficult to decipher, but may be a bear, facing forwards, but holding on to a ragged staff to the left. The body of the bear has deep vertical horizontal ridge which may depict textured fur and has a small circular low-relief pellet in the centre. The other interpretation is it is a person holding a staff, wearing drapery. On the reverse the lower edge tapers and has a two parallel grooves,…
