Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete and bent Medieval copper-alloy composite buckle plate. The plate consists of a 8.5mm wide strip folded back on itself to the outside, around what would have been an iron spindle that retained a pin (prong now missing) in a central plate recess. On the other side of the middle strip is a separate and thinner third strip which when viewed in plan has a fiddle-shaped terminal end stopping short of the loop. On a medial alignment towards the looped end where all three layers are coincident, are two longitudinally set and immediately adjacent extant rivets, securing through all …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Gilded copper alloy late Medieval to Post Medieval finger ring. Oval recessed bezel with missing decorative setting, tapering from the shoulders to a narrow 1.5mm sub-circular section hoop. On the outside of the bezel at the approximate depth of the internal recess is a grooved collar running around the circumference of the setting. Much gilding remains, mainly on the outside shoulders and the internal surface of the hoop and bezel. The centre of the bezel recess has a central circular depression, but there is no indication of the nature of the original decorative insert. Circa AD1450-1700.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Distal end of a tertiary blade, semi-soft hammer struck from a single platform core, of unpatinated semi-translucent grey flint, the proximal end is broken by a transverse bending fracture, it is unclear if this is intentional or damage from heavy farm machinery. Both lateral edges are sharp and lack any obvious use-wear, the distal end terminates in a hinge. Likely to be later prehistoric rather than Mesolithic. Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4,000 to 700 BC.

Distorted but complete Late Iron Age to Early Saxon copper-alloy penannular brooch, with round-sectioned frame and folded-over terminals. There is a curved chamfer on each side of each terminal, giving them appearance of an animal’s snout. The pin is flat and coiled around the bar at one end. Its main shaft is circular in cross-section and gradually tapers to a point at the tip. Mackreth (2011) type f2.b, (similar to No.3336, Plate 145), part of Fowler (1960) D1, and D2. Also, Booth (2014) type D2. Mid 1st to 6th century AD. Diameter of cross-section: 2.2mm. Estimated diameter…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable medieval copper-alloy miscast mount. Cast in one piece, it consists of two flat sub-circular discs joined by a short narrowed section, one larger than the other and each with an integral pointed rivet in the centre. The narrowed section appears to have two short notches on one side, on the reverse (the face from which the rivets project) leaving a small wedge-shaped ridge between them. A small, poorly defined knop projects from one end of the smaller disc, while at the opposite end a large irregularly-shaped blob of metal projects outwards, rearwards and slightly forwards fro…

Incomplete medieval copper-alloy folding strap clasp. Only the bar and two short stubs of the sides (top and bottom) of the frame, along with just one side of the folding plate, are extant. The missing part of the plate has broken away just after the fold, so that it still holds the remnant of the frame in-situ. The bar is circular in cross-section and narrowed. The stubs of sides of the frame are trapezoidal in cross-section. They sit at right angles to the bar, but one that survives to sufficient length shows that the internal width of the frame begins to expand. On the external edg…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper-alloy trefoil pendent loop from a bar-mount strap fitting. It is sub-rectangular in cross section. The internal edges of one face (the front) are apparently bevelled but now quite rounded by wear. Each of the three foils are of roughly equal size. The uppermost foil is flattened on the upper external edge to allow clearance and smooth rolling within the mount’s suspension loop. It is also slightly narrowed here, probably as a a result of wear. Similar examples on this database, together with their bar-mounts, include NMS-23DAB7 and NMS-61B0C2. Second half of 14th cen…
