A complete copper alloy finger ring in the form of a buckled belt of uncertain date, possibly dating from late Medieval to Post Medieval.
The ring is in the form of a buckled belt, made from a strip with an integral loop at one end. The end of the strip was bent around to form the hoop and inserted into the loop. The loop is sub circular with poorly surviving mouldings on its outside and where it joins the hoop. The hoop is rectangular sectioned with c.4mm wide parallel sides. The tongue end of the hoop also bears mouldings as well as a small circular projection (likely representing …

A cast copper alloy ring, possibly a finger ring, or ring associated with a candle holder of Post medieval date or other such household objects. The ring has uneven thickness due to manufacturing error, wear, or corrosion. The ring now has a maximum diameter of 21mm not including the “bezel” and maximum hoop dimensions of 3.7mm wide and 1.4mm thick. One section of the slightly crushed hoop is extremely worn, being only 1.7mm wide and 0.5mm thick. There is a single protuberance on the hoop, in the form of an irregular oval sectioned cast projection to one side of the ring. This may…

An incomplete cast copper alloy finger ring likely of Victorian date (c.19th century). The finger ring comprises of a sub-oval signet (14.6mm long x 11.8mm wide x 1.5mm thick) and portions of the band (9mm long and 3.1mm wide at the break; and 5.9mm long and 4mm wide at the break). The signet appears to be engraved with monogram style letters on the face but cannot be determined due to old damage. The reverse is plain and undecorated with much of the surface patina stripped in old damage. The surviving patina is shiny dark green with large patches of dull reddish brown around the edge …

A cast copper alloy and glass finger ring of Medieval date. The Ring has a four clawed setting at the bezel holding a worn white gem, likely made of glass. The bezel is 8.9mm wide, 10.1mm long and 5mm thick. The setting is placed slightly off centre on the bezel, so projects perpendicular to the hoop by around 2mm. The hoop is roughly plano-convex in section and of uneven width, partially due to damage. The widest part of the hoop is to one side of the bezel (7.3mm), and the thickness is variable and uneven, being c. 1.6mm at the sides of the hoop and 2mm at the back. The internal dia…

Silver finger ring with plain loop and flat oval bezel. The bezel is decorated with an incised stylized palm branch.
Dimensions: internal diameter 17mm; bezel 16mm (long) by 9mm (wide); weight 5.8g.
Evidence of Date

Blackburn area, Lancashire (Herepath 2005); York (Downes 2007); Devon (Barton 2008); West Lindsey, Lincolnshire (Daubney 2009); Braughing, Hertfordshire (Watters 2014); Hayton, Yorkshire (Richardson 2019).

Description
Gold posy ring in the form of a plain broad band of flattened D cross section. The inner face is engraved with legend
*CONTINEW + FAITHFVLL
in Roman capitals.
The hoop is slightly misshapen and has an internal diameter of 18.1 x 13.1mm; band width 4.1mm; band thickness of 0.6mm; weight 2.73g.
Discussion
Dating is reliant on the legend and the style of lettering, which is typical of a seventeenth-century date. Posy inscriptions fall into a number of formulaic categories (see Evans 1931, 54), with mottoes such as ‘Lets live & die in unity’, &lsquo…

Roman copper alloy finger-ring of c. mid-1st to 3rd century AD date
The finger ring is incomplete, with a fragmentary and distorted hoop (with a height of 13.5mm and a weight of 2.5g) and was of oval form. The hoop is of D-shaped section and was narrowest at the base (with a width and thickness of 1.8mm and 1.5mm respectively). The hoop gradually widens to the shoulders which have no surviving applied decoration. The oval bezel is now eroded on one side (11.5mm wide and 2.0mm deep) and is comparatively less finished on the rear. The decoration on the bezel comprises three circula…

Medieval copper alloy finger-ring of 14th or 15th century date
The cast finger-ring is fragmentary, represented by the bezel and shoulders only (with a surviving height of 7.2mm and a weight of 2.7g). Little of the integral hoop now survives, which appears to have been of rectangular section at the shoulders (4mm wide and 1.8mm thick) with no applied decoration evident on the surviving stub (with a surviving width of 5.8mm and an internal diameter of approximately 19mm). The bezel is circular (with a diameter of 13.4mm) with some peripheral damage. The underside of the bezel is c…

Probable Iron finger-ring bezel of Roman date
The probable finger-ring is fragmentary, represented by the bezel and shoulders (with a surviving length of 15mm, a surviving width of 25.4mm and a weight of 4.2g). The side with better preserved shoulder has broken just below a sharp turn (where the hoop has a width of 4.1mm and a thickness of 1.9mm), suggesting a carinated or ‘keeled’ form to the finger-ring. Ferrous corrosion has masked the detail over the ring but the hoop appears to have been rectangular-sectioned, gradually widening to the bezel. No decoration is now evident…
