Description The small oval matrix, in silver, retains the rectangular stub of the now missing handle, which was square in cross-section, on the reverse. The matrix is engraved with a cartouche bearing arms: cross engrailed with ermine in quarters, and scallop shell at cross base. Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe fragment. This is a small blade end fragment of a bronze socketed axe, representing perhaps 20% of the original axe. The sides of the axe flare at the blade end and the blade edge is curved. The base of the socket is clearly present. Too little of the axe survives to identify whether it was ribbed or plain and to type. The blade surfaces are worn and weathered, the break edges also being abraded. The axe has a dark brown patination.
