Object type: STYLUS
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Monmouthshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete probable copper alloy stylus of Roman or Medieval Date. The stylus is 86.5mm long and is bent, so the original would have been of greater length. The thickest part is c. 3mm square in section, with the top 31.5mm of the object expanding and flattening towards the broken upper end, which is 6.1mm wide and 1.3mm thick. This flattened part would be used to erase writing on a wax tablet. The lower broken end of the stylus is 2mm by 2.2mm thick, tapering from the thickest section. The stylus is broken at both ends badly corroded, with a rough, pitted dark green surface, showi…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Perforated stone weight of uncertain date possibly medieval The weight is of irregular rectangular form (93.9mm long, 66.6mm wide and weighing 150.5g), of variable thickness (with a maximum thickness of 19.5mm) and is made from a coarse-grained sandstone. The top edge and one of the side edges appear to be moderately rounded and are likely to be unmodified, while the other two edges are irregular and probably trimmed to the desired shape. The perforation is circular (10.6mm diameter) and is wider at one face, but appears to have been drilled rather than pecked. One face (convex) …

A complete stone or ceramic spindle whorl, weight, or gaming piece of uncertain date, possibly Roman to Medieval. The object is circular in plan and convex in profile with a diameter of 25.9mm, height of 18mm and weighs 13.99g. The circular central perforation penetrates the object thickest part of the object (18mm) with an internal diameter of 6.7mm. The object is finely made and evenly polished with a smooth even surface. The surface is undecorated and lacks diagnostic features, so it is not possible to securely ascribe a date. A small pebble is wedged inside one side of the perfora…

Copper alloy anthropomorphic cast head of uncertain date The solid cast head is complete but has broken around the neck (with a surviving length of 39.5mm and a weight of 112.6g). The head is crudely but skilfully moulded and was clearly cast from a clay or wax pattern, as evidenced by the soft ‘plastic’ moulding marks. The head is of an older male and is depicted without hair and the ears are evident as curved raised wedges. The raised brows are particularly prominent as is the wide and clearly defined nose. The recessed eyes are outlined with grooves and with a central ind…

Copper alloy pin of uncertain date, with possible zoomorphic terminal The cast pin is near-complete but is heavily-corroded (with an overall length of 43.5mm and a weight of 3.4g). The terminal is asymmetric and of undulating form, possibly representing stylised opposing birds (with a width of 19.6mm and a thickness of 3.7mm). There is a slight protrusion at the centre of the apex and may be a damaged stub. Beneath the protrusion is a circular perforation through the pin head (of 2.8mm diameter) and retaining the remnants of a fixing, possibly the link from a chain. The head narrows…

The strip is broken at one end but appears to be complete on the other (with a surviving length of 108.2mm and a weight of 2.6g). The complete end has a straight terminal (6.0mm wide and 0.3mm thick) and the sides are straight and near-parallel for their surviving length. The strip is decorated on one face with a central row of hand-punched dots and the terminal has a border of punched dots. The decoration is interrupted near the centre (55mm from the terminal and 43mm from the broken end) where there is an undecorated but has three ridges across its width. The surface is worn with as…

Copper alloy socketed and looped fitting of uncertain date The cast fitting appears to be near-complete but corroded and worn (with a length of 32.8mm and a weight of 15.4g) and is comparatively crude casting. The socket interior is of trilobed form (13mm both wide and long and 13mm – 17mm deep), open at both ends and with a break at the rear. There are decorative mouldings on the outside of the socket, comprising opposing arcs on the concave edges, with one face deeper than the other. Copper alloy tanged awl of uncertain date The cast awl is incomplete, probably only slightly truncated (with a length of 46.5mm and a weight of 7.9g). Damage at both ends now makes it difficult to determine the point from the tang. The awl is of sub-square section at both ends and gradually widens to its midsection (with dimensions 6.1mm square). At one end the corners appear to be faceted and probably contemporary with its use, suggesting that this end may have been the blade. Damage to the end makes it difficult to determine whether the tip was a pointed or edged. There is no d…

Cast copper alloy fitting or mount of uncertain date The fitting has a finger-ring like form but has a thickened area projecting to the side, now damaged and fragmentary, suggesting a different function. The object is fragmentary, comprising one fragmentary side and a decorative top (with a surviving height of 6mm and a weight of 7.5g).
